Background Statement

Friends of Arcadia Airport was incorporated in October of 2012 as a non-profit airport support group. The airport had been in decline for many years and needed help. Small airports are closing at an alarming rate all across the country and once they are gone they are lost forever. This trend has a negative impact on the local community. A group of local pilots wanted to help our failing airport come alive again by holding pancake breakfasts that would attract out of town pilots to visit.

The fly-in breakfasts increased air traffic at the airport and the Friends board of directors reached out to aviation groups interested in under wing camping and managed to attract a very small group for a 3 day "on airport" camping event. Friends planned that first event to be held on Rodeo Weekend so that visiting pilots could attend the All Florida Championship Rodeo held annually in Arcadia.

The event was a huge success and sparked the idea of a dedicated area to host more of the same and work to establish partnerships with local businesses and attractions. With the pancake breakfasts attendance growing monthly the Friends board sought approval from the City Council to use a 3 acre parcel of land on the airport to develop a one of a kind Fly-In/Camp-Out Center and began a capital campaign to fund it. We called it "Aviation City" as Arcadia was known as Aviation City back during World War 2. The facility features a 20 ft. X 30 ft. pilot shelter with picnic tables, a beautiful brick fire pit, charcoal grills, running water and electric and clean portable toilets. The site also features two very unique circular taxiways that allow pilots to taxi their aircraft right onto the campsite and park under live oaks and camp out. Pilots now fly in from all over the United States to camp out at this great little airport and visit local businesses. We are in our third year operating the facility and it is having a very positive impact on the airport and the local economy. We have earned the respect of the community, City Council and the County Commission because we are having such a positive impact in such a short time.

Areas Served Comments Friends of Arcadia Airport, Inc. is a non profit support group dedicated to promoting economic development at Arcadia Municipal Airport, the City of Arcadia and DeSoto County. We do this by finding ways to entice out of town pilots to visit our airport and also local businesses. The Fly-In/Camp-Out Center is the hook to get them here. We then work with local businesses to offer special deals for the visiting pilots to visit their particular business.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

Friends of Arcadia Airport, Inc. was formed out of frustration after working on the City of Arcadia’s Airport Advisory Committee for many years. All of our board members have served on the airport advisory committee. The political process proved very difficult to getting things done that would help grow the airport and economic development in the local area. After serving 4 years and resigning as Chairman of the committee the idea of forming a local aviation support group became possible.

The biggest challenge of any all volunteer group is getting dedicated volunteers to serve. We are blessed to have a core group that continues to step up and participate. As we get more and more positive press and the success continues we hope to expand our core group.
Each one of our Board of Directors has been involved in aviation since the early 70’s. They understand the need to think outside the box in order to have an impact, and we certainly have made an impact.

Friends is a one of a kind non-profit airport support group that is on the leading edge of redefining what a local General Aviation Airport needs to do to thrive and become an asset to local businesses and attractions.

Friends of Arcadia Airport were recently featured in a national video released by the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association called “America's Community Airport, Going Higher”. What we are doing here with Aviation City has become an example for other general aviation airports to follow.

Our progress has been impressive considering we had lots of opposition in the beginning. Change is often opposed, but once success is achieved the opposition fades.

Description This ongoing program has been very successful and is growing yearly. We are constantly reaching out to out of town pilots and developing events that attracts them to our airport. IE; Arcadia holds a big time Professional Rodeo every March  which is sold out months in advance for each performance. In partnership with the Rodeo Association we arranged for discounted tickets for our guests and arranged for transportation from the airport to the rodeo. Airport camping is becoming very popular so we just find a good reason for them to fly to our airport and then spend money in the local economy. This year we held 4 major fly-ins which each featured a different venue locally.

Short Term Success Pilots and their families attend these events and have a wonderful time bonding and enjoying quality time as a family. Local businesses increase sales on event days. DeSoto County is a very poor county so the chance to increase sales, even for a day, has a positive impact on local businesses.
Long Term Success Local businesses that participate in our Fly-In/Camp-Out events gain a  broader customer base than they would otherwise achieve. The City of Arcadia and DeSoto County increase the number of visitors and publicity for our community and Friends also benefits as word of mouth among pilots spreads the word about our great facility.
Program Success Monitoring This program's success is measured by monitoring the feedback we get from emails to our website from pilots that visit Aviation City as well as reports from local businesses and attractions. The positive stories about our program have been many in both the local and national media, Aviation organizations like the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association,  the Recreational Aviation Foundation and even the Federal Aviation Administration have done positive stories on us.
Program Success Examples
The Florida Sport Antique Aviation & Classic Association after spending a 3 day fly in at Aviation City where attended the All Florida Championship Rodeo gave us a one thousand dollar donation to help continue the program.
The Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association included Friends of Arcadia Airport in a national video release where they featured only 6 airports.
Program Comments by Organization Our programs are all based on improving local economic development. We are thankful that they have been doing what they are designed to do which is to bring more visitors to our town..

Friends of Arcadia Airport, Inc. collaborates with multiple aviation organizations regularly. Over the last 4 years we have worked with the Recreational Aviation Foundation on multiple fly-ins held at Aviation City. We have supplied a speaker for their national board meeting in Bentonville, Ark. They flew in for a volunteer work day and helped us with our application to the FAA prior to construction of our 3 acre camp site.
We have also worked with the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association on developing an FAA rule change to specifically allow "on airport camping" nationally.
We collaborate regularly with both the City of Arcadia and DeSoto County governments to promote events. Recently we received a matching grant form DeSoto County Tourism Department to develop a rack card which promotes Aviation City, our fly-in campground.
The City of Arcadia worked with us on developing the 3 acres we use for a campground  by supplying water and electric to the site.
We also collaborate with local businesses and attractions on events that can attract more visitors to their business.

Financial Comments by Organization
We feel we have exhausted our donation possibilities here in DeSoto County. We have had great support from 2 local businesses, Mosaic Fertilizer Company and Peace River Citrus  that have both given us major donations which were used to construct the 20 X 30 pilot shelter. Our hope is to increase our fundraising capacity by doing more advertising for our pancake breakfasts next season and also locate more help.
We hope to take advantage of the Foundation, learning ways to improve what we do.
