Background Statement

Founded in Chicago in 2003, Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) is a volunteer movement that gives hope and support to families in distress. Located in 70 cities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries, Safe Families supports families during crises. We are motivated by compassion to keep children safe and out of foster care.

Under current economic conditions, many families experience financial crisis, unemployment, and homelessness. Often these situations result in, or are made worse by, other hardships such as parental violence, drug or alcohol use, physical or mental illness, or incarceration.

In these situations, parents or guardians may be incapable of providing a safe and caring environment for their children, putting them at risk of abuse and neglect. In the past, extended family or neighbors stepped in to help families in crisis by caring for their children for short periods of time. Today, however, many families are socially isolated, and their extended family is nonexistent, or unavailable or unable to help.

Adding to the problem is the fact that most state child welfare agencies are required under law to rescue only those children who suffer blatant abuse or neglect, leaving thousands of children at risk.

Safe Families hosts vulnerable children. We create extended-family–like supports for desperate families through a community of devoted volunteers who are motivated by faith to keep children safe and to reunite families.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

Thank you for researching Bethany Christian Services and our Safe Families for Children program. As the leader of our mission here in Florida, I am extremely passionate about seeing children in safe and loving families. Here in the Sarasota area, we know many families find themselves in a place of crisis with nowhere to turn—with no extended support network. Through our Safe Families for Children program, we seek to be that extended safety net for families in crisis so they can maintain custody of their children, all the while ensuring their children are cared for and safe. We have a proven track record of providing this service in Florida since 2008 and are beyond blessed to offer this integral service in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. Thank you for your interest.

Short Term Success By the end of one training workshop, we will have recruited at least two additional host families, one coaches, and eight advocates for the work of Safe Families.
Long Term Success
After a number of trainings in different area churches, our community will see a great deal of improvement through the following means:
1. Church awareness of local families in need; resulting in the local church taking some of the burden off of child welfare agencies and exhausted community programs
2. A larger number of host families recruited, trained and approved therefore allowing;
   a. More children at risk of abuse or neglect being placed in a safe environment during a time of crisis
   b. More families in crisis being reached before anything escalates to danger for a child
   c. Less tax dollars spent for children placed in foster care (due to Safe Families being able to intervene before this becomes necessary.)
3. A larger number of coaches trained to help the parent/family in crisis resulting in;
   a. Healthier family units due to a better support system
   b. Parents receiving help through different community resources and ministries with needs such as job training, career exploration, substance abuse recovery help, parenting classes, life skills trainings.
Program Success Monitoring We will monitor the success of these trainings by regularly checking in with host families to make sure they continually feel equipped and supported, by assisting parents that were in crisis at the start of our involvement get to a healthier place physically, emotionally, spiritually, and by monitoring the placement of each child to make sure that they are safe, healthy and loved.
Program Success Examples
4,606 families have hosted children since Safe Families began in 2002. (National Statistic)

Description

Safe Families for Children is a nationally-recognized, replicable program that serves children and their parents who are experiencing short-term crisis situations such as sudden illness, job loss, unexpected eviction, single parenthood, or postpartum depression. Unfortunate circumstances often create stress that will lead families to putting their children at risk for neglect and abuse. Safe Families for Children (SFFC) allows parents to voluntarily place their children with a host family who provides safety and housing until the parents can become established and improve their stability and quality of life.

The objectives of the program are to prevent child abuse; to provide family support and stabilization; and to proactively and appropriately deflect children from entering the child welfare system.

We officially began hosting children in Bradenton and Sarasota in 2016.
