Needs Statement

In order for the program to continue and grow there is a reliance on generous donations from community partners and individuals; without these donations, serving the youth would not be possible.

There are specific and immediate areas of tangible need within our program: school supplies, snacks, office materials, etc. These tangible items will go far in aiding endeavors of The Community Within, Inc.

Although all donations are appreciated, a monetary donation contributes to the immediate and future objectives of this agency. The intent is to expand the CEP monthly trips to include overnight travel opportunities, the below list reflects some specific needs associated with that expansion.

1.Transportation- $25,000.00 for 15 passenger Van to transport participants to Career Exploration Program Events.
2.Transportation Fund - $2500.00 Creation of fund to pay for Maintenance / Expenses associated with Transportation.
3.Technology Equipment -  $1500.00 Portable (wireless) High Graphic Color Printer, Projector, and Laptop.
4.Establishment of  and ongoing funding for CEP Scholarship Fund- $1000.00 for ten students ($100 each) to attend Overnight Career Exploration Trip.
5.Volunteer Appreciation / Enrichment / Training Funding: $1000.00 to provide training for 5 tutors / mentors ($200 each) at an educational or leadership conference.
Background Statement

The Community Within was established in 2015 by a firefighter, Bobby Williams. The intent was to provide tools of success and opportunities to empower the children served. As a firefighter, he saw the impact his uniform had on the community children; being aware of the lack of positive male role models in the lives of youngsters, he tapped into his passion and became part of the change needed in marginalized neighborhoods. The objective was to surround kids and young adults with the positive influence of local community members who have found personal success.

Youth need encouragement in order to develop life skills to expand their opportunities for excellence. The Community Within understands that it takes a collaborative effort to increase the trajectory of accomplishment with the young people we serve. We believe with a strong community and proper resources, we can help young community members successfully graduate high school and become productive members of society.

We start with promoting self-respect and respecting others while providing tutors for any academic weaknesses. We then introduce a philanthropic emphasis through volunteer work for the community. Our students also benefit from tours to colleges to motivate and increase academic standards; traveling to national monuments to witness history; participating in special events and activities with their peers; and job fairs to expose them to other options for success outside of sports and entertainment. As a firefighter the training emphasis the concept of "get the job done"; that same ideology is espoused to the young people we serve at The Community Within.

Description

In order to increase the present and future trajectory of the students served, The Community Within embraces the belief that it is imperative to build academic capacity, empathy, and employability. Through a partnership with Booker Elementary and Middle schools, students are provided after school tutoring and mentoring. This partnership provides a pool of participants for the Career Exploration Program (CEP). CEP students meet weekly to hear community speakers, discuss employability skills and opportunities for volunteerism, and to plan relevant monthly enrichment trips to various professional, artistic, and academic facilities.

By exposing community youth to a wide variety of experiences, The Community Within is increasing the breadth of options available for youth to choose their personal direction.

Short Term Success Immediate results will be evident by youth developing a greater respect and understanding of their role in the community. They develop accountability for their actions and recognize the organic and interrelated relationships that exist. This is gauged by the immediate decrease in school referrals for behaviour, attitude , and performance.
Long Term Success The youth involved in CEP will choose a direction which, although inconsistent with expected norms, may provide an avenue of success; allowing the CEP participants a way to overcome the accepted avenues for careers and embrace a more personal route.
Program Success Monitoring Parents and teachers complete bi-monthly surveys to monitor students progress. End of year reports (data collected at the school level) reflecting the decrease in school conduct reports and an increase in students performance. Each student will complete a new school year self assessment and an end of school year assessment, self evaluation is an important component to emotional intelligence and character growth.
Program Success Examples A child, who never knew that a career of cooking could provide a prosperous and respectful living, asked a facilitator for CEP to plan a visit to a restaurant. When asked why? The youth expressed a desire to learn more about his passion, cooking. This youth and other participants were then given the opportunity to tour a restaurant and speak to the chef. The scales of ignorance fell away, and now this young man proudly proclaims that his passion is cooking, and he will grow up to not only be a chef, but to own his own restaurant. Before CEP, what were his options? Very few.
