Background Statement
Our founder has worked with women for over 30 years. She had a vision of helping women and children in her native state of New York. She felt called to the state of Florida due to the overwhelming need here. She left her home, children and job of ten plus years to pursue what she felt was a calling on her life. Through a series of what she calls God stories, each piece of the puzzle was connected one by one. Through community support and the support of local churches Prodigal Daughters Journey Home came into existence. We were able to obtain a lawyer free of charge, accountant free of charge and support to build the foundation of our mission. Prodigal Daughters Journey Home obtained 501(c)3 status in 2014. We serve women with life controlling addictions. We house both women and their children for eighteen months. We educate and provide counseling, both individual and group. Our program classes consist of nutrition, parenting, money management, domestic violence, anger management, Biblical Studies, educational classes on the effects of alcohol and drugs. Residents will also be given opportunity to attend GED, Technical school and college.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
I have worked in the addiction field for over thirty years both as a Addictions Counselor and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I have seen the devastation of how addiction destroys both the women and children's lives. Their opportunities to succeed are limited due to the lack of support being consistent and comprehensive. I have observed women leaving rehabilitation centers time and time again spending 30 days, 90 days, 6 months only to relapse due to the gaps in their foundation. These gaps manifest either in their coping skills, education, parenting skills (the inability to deal with stress raising children), housing and job opportunities being limited.  Our challenges are to provide services that are comprehensive and effective to make those life changes. The challenges are to develop a team of people who are dedicate to helping women and children. We have high standards for our volunteers to be sure that the right person working closely with the women are equipped with knowledge about drug and alcohol addiction. We want to be sure our ladies get the best of care while here. Finding people who will go through a vigorous application process is our biggest challenge. We walk along side of them to help them in the process. Finding funding is another challenge. We are not waiting on others, we hold breakfast once a month to bring in funds and are planning fund raising events as well.
Programs
Description

This is an educational course for mothers to attend to learn more about the essential skills of parenting. A mother can attend this class based on a court order or simply to learn effective parenting skills. We do not require the mother to maintain a relationship with the other parent however we do focus on co-parenting skills, and nurturing the relationship the children have with both their parents. This class caters to mothers with children of all ages. The primary goals of this parenting class focuses on developing strong emotional bonds between the mother and her children, learning to recognize their strengths as parents, learning basic child development so they know what to expect at each stage in their child’s life, learning effective age appropriate discipline strategies, improving communication between the mother and her children including conflict resolution, and teaching the mothers how to deal with daily responsibilities of maintaining a home and family.
