Background Statement

The Center for Mindful Grieving envisions a day when grief (emotional pain) is normalized rather than stigmatized. The Center for Mindful Grieving is an organization that brings innovative, pioneering modalities and creative therapeutic approaches fostering one’s ability to turn their emotional pain into their personal power for healing, recovery, and manifestation of a more authentic life existence.

The Center for Mindful Grieving was founded to provide individuals and families with a resource and place to turn to after the loss of a loved one. Unlike traditional resources that intellectualize the experience, The Center for Mindful Grieving focuses primarily on the emotional and spiritual experience of grief and bereavement. The Center for Mindful Grieving stands behind the notion that grief, emotional pain, is a normal, human experience not a mental health disorder in and of itself. When you are grieving, it is your heart that is broken not your head. The Center for Mindful Grieving facilitates one’s ability to adjust to life after the death of a loved one in a way that fosters authentic healing and life transformation THROUGH the experience.

The Center for Mindful Grieving employs a holistic approach to facilitating life transformational healing and recovery through grief. The logo for The Center for Mindful Grieving represents the internal struggle of turning away from emotional pain (grief) that society and our culture reinforce versus turning towards it. When you turn away (left) your inner light exists, struggling to penetrate through, but is dimmed and you operate in life from a conditioned, darkened place diminishing your quality of life and increasing interpersonal and community dysfunction. When you turn towards it (right) with mindfulness, guidance, and nurturing, you won't necessarily eradicate the darkness, but your inner light will break through it and you will operate in life more authentically; allowing you to feel more centered, balanced, and equipped to handle the difficulties of life.

The Center for Mindful Grieving does not believe that quality, in-depth, systemic emotional health services focused on grief recovery and life transformation should only be accessible to the wealthy or well-insured. The Center for Mindful Grieving will bring this work to the financially challenged and disenfranchised of our community, with a special focus on Veterans and those who are homeless, for the benefit of all who are so fortunate to call the Gulf Coast home.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
The Center for Mindful Grieving exists to facilitate a mindful, non-stigmatizing resource & place for individuals & families impacted by death specifically, however we are well equipped to relieve emotional pain stemming from any loss/trauma experience. We take a holistic approach to grieving by harnessing one’s emotional pain to heal, adjust, & transform after the loss thereby manifesting a more stabilized, connected, & authentic existence.

The Center for Mindful Grieving was born from my own experience & journey THROUGH grief. On July 9, 2005 my brother (my only sibling) who suffered for many years, died from a rare disease called Adrenoleukodystrophy at the age of 26. My life & world changed forever. In addition to watching a sibling, who I loved like my own child because of the many years spent caring for him, die a slow, degenerative death, I was then faced with the aftermath of adjusting to a new existence, a new identity, a new normal, as an “only child” compounded by the heaviness of a grief stricken heart. How was I to do that? I went on a quest to uncover & discover tools that helped me heal & transform my life into a more authentic existence. I set on a mission to bring what I discovered to as many people as possible. After a 10 year career in the medical & pharmaceutical industries, my last of which was with the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, I was financially successful yet spiritually unfulfilled. My loss led me to change my career path, obtain my Masters, & build my Life THROUGH Loss™ practice, philosophy and brand of therapy that today educates & facilitates unique grief recovery & life transformation for many on the Suncoast who are financially stable or well-insured.  But grief doesn't discriminate.  Grief doesn't care if you are rich or poor.  The only criteria is that you are human... Grief is a universal and inevitable experience.

Imagine if, like a rehabilitation center, there was an "adjustment center" dedicated to facilitating authentic healing, recovery and life transformation after the death of a loved one… Imagine if when you were grieving there was a place you could retreat to and trust that you’d be made whole again after your loss...
In five years, I envision The Center for Mindful Grieving being housed on Siesta Key and offering 5 - 7 day in-residencies for anyone grieving the death of a loved one with mindful, holistic programs that facilitate healing, recovery, and emotionally healthy adjustment to life after the death of a loved one.
The Center for Mindful Grieving will be the beacon & community resource that educates, facilitates, connects, & empowers a more positive outcome to one of life’s most guaranteed experiences; death. Through the on-going development & implementation of pioneering modalities & community partnerships, we will minimize the risk to self, family & to our community at large that is caused by unaddressed emotional pain: grief.
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

Emotional health is not a luxury. I do not believe quality, in-depth grief recovery & life transformation work should only be accessible to the well-off or well-insured. When you are grieving, your emotional, mental, physical, & spiritual health are at risk for impairment & dysfunction. The impact is not only felt within oneself, but also within the family system, & ultimately the community. Our objective is to bring unique healing & life transformational modalities & one-of-a-kind, result-driven therapeutic services to anyone regardless of income. The Center for Mindful Grieving will remove the cloak of stigma and shame that many in grief are wrapped in one client at a time.  Unlike traditional ways that facilitate one's ability to cope with grief emotions, The Center for Mindful Grieving will empower clients to move through their grief and come out on the other side of the experience healed, recovered, and transformed.

I am humbled an honored to do this work...

When you are grieving and in emotional pain due to a death, awakening the creative side of yourself helps to release the accumulated energy of grief and loss allowing for the transformation of your emotional pain into your personal power for healing, life transformation, and an increased quality of life and relationships.

Through the implementation of a synergistic combination of: traditional psychology theories, holistic teachings, mindfulness approaches, psycho-educational programs, and intuitive sensibilities, The HeART Therapy Method™ and Creation Energy Therapy™facilitates life transformational healing by removing the deep-rooted layers of the conditioned self and reawakens the authentic YOU.

This allows participants, specifically the disenfranchised and financially compromised of our community to grieve and heal in an emotionally healthy, mindful manner that reduces dysfunctional pain-avoiding behaviors empowering the self, the family system, and the community as a whole.

Short Term Success

When you address grief (emotional pain) in a  mindful & purposeful manner, you reduce the culture-infused, reactive response to avoid pain at any cost, i.e. substance use & abuse, bullying, domestic violence, isolation, multiple partners, & criminal activity to name a few. You also reduce the propensity for the manifestation of predominant “mental health disorders” such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and post traumatic stress symptoms. At the end of the comprehensive 8-10 week program, 100% of participants are released of the sharp emotional pain of grief. They gain significant insight into underlying root causes of their grief response & are taught tangible methods & mindful techniques to address grief emotions they may experience in the future. The participant is empowered through teachings & modalities that awaken their creativity in any form providing an authentic source for emotional stabilization, family cohesion, and positive community participation.

Long Term Success

Our prison system, homeless, abused, bully/bullied, low-income, & disenfranchised members of our community are all people who have experienced grief emotions as a result of death. The pain one experiences when they are in grief is an energy that must manifest in some form. When emotional pain is not comprehensively addressed, often times people within these demographics turn to destructive behaviors that negatively impact their sense of self, their family, their children, & ultimately the community at large. Our long-term mission is to offer a place & a resource that the community & social service agencies can turn to that mindfully & purposefully facilitates the healing, adjustment, & life transformation process after the death of a loved one. This will provide a reduction in the propensity for criminal activity, domestic violence, the cycle of homelessness/joblessness, the bullying epidemic in our schools, addiction & substance abuse; all of which are fueled by unresolved grief.

Program Success Monitoring

The program does not eradicate sadness, it excavates pain. Program success to date has been proven with Life THROUGH Loss™ clients. This is monitored with session notes as well as client feedback.  Every client has reported feeling “lighter” and more connected to their authentic self. Clients report feeling like they can enjoy life despite having experienced the loss of a loved one. They report that the memories of their loved ones now bring smiles to their faces rather than tears. The program is designed to empower and provide tools for success reducing the requirement for on-going therapy. Continued program success is confirmed by the reduction for continued supportive sessions.

Testimonials from Life THROUGH Loss™ clients include:
"Probably the best part of the process is Kandy's ability to create a safe environment where I was capable of expressing thoughts & feelings that were sheltered deep within & not easily accessible.";
"I am so thankful to have found Kandy and for the uplifting authentic supportive force she has continued to be in my life, hands down the best therapist I have ever had.";
"Life through Loss has changed my life in ways I could have never imagined. I can only hope and pray that everyone gets the opportunity to learn this new way to live. Thank you Kandy, for giving us the tools to live life to the best of our ability!";
I lost my mom 3 years ago and walked around with a very sad and heavy heart . After Kandy's 10 week individualized grief recovery program I feel so much better. Grief therapy is an individual experience and I feel renewed, rejuvenated and my heavy heart is no more. Thank you."

Adjusting to life after the death of a loved one is an on-going experience, not a one time event. Many social service agencies aim to provide a broader impact on a community by providing a breath of services to individuals. The Center for Mindful Grieving aims to provide a depth of specialized services with a focus on grief (emotional pain) healing and recovery with unique, pioneering therapeutic modalities coupled with comprehensive life transformation services. A greater focus on the foundational impact grief has on the participants fosters a long-term, broader range of individual, familial, and community impact. Once a client has experienced grief healing & recovery, they are still tasked to adjust to life after the loss. We are able to provide comprehensive, systemic, in-depth case management that will support skills training, job placement, housing options, as well as emotional support that would otherwise increase the propensity for dysfunction if left unattended.

Short Term Success

The disenfranchised of our community are often compounded with many other challenges and barriers to a satisfactory quality of life. When one is experiencing grief, these life challenges seem even more insurmountable. The Center for Mindful Grieving will not only provide the methodologies to heal, recover and transform one’s life through their grief experience, we will also provide the necessary case management to support the adjustment to life after the loss. Prior to and at the end of the HeART Therapy Method™ Program, participants will be assigned a Comprehensive Case Manager to identify potential barriers in order to maximize successful adjustment to life after loss.

Long Term Success

Unresolved grief is a powerful internal source that causes many problems that effect our community. Long-term success would be evidenced by participants who have a broader understanding of a normal and natural emotion, grief, that removes the stigma and shame. This is the pathway to a more authentic existence which fuels the innate desire to live a more positive and productive life. The Center for Mindful Grieving strives to attend to the disenfranchised and financially challenged of our community with micro-focused services creating macro-impact on the community. Long-term success would see participants overcome addiction, unemployment, homelessness, truancy, domestic violence, criminal activity, family abandonment/dissolution, and any other barrier to an improved quality of life.

Program Success Examples

Testimonials have been provided by Life THROUGH Loss™ clients as well as church organizations and social service agencies who have utilized Life THROUGH Loss™ programs and seminars such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Fatherhood Program through Jewish Family & Children’s Services, Majestic Ministries of Christ, & St. Boniface Episcopal Church to name a few. Participants have included at-risk members of our community as well as the well-off or well-insured. The results are universal and impactful and the success of the program is part of what has inspired the creation of the Center for Mindful Grieving. WE do not believe quality, in-depth grief recovery & life transformation work should only be accessible to the well-off or well-insured.  Partnering with clients and their families through comprehensive, systemic case management will add an even greater layer of transformational services unmatched by anything offered to the community today.

The Center for Mindful Grieving strongly believes in working collaboratively with organizations within our community that are doing grassroots, in-depth work to support individuals & families, especially those who are disenfranchised & financially challenged. Suncoast Sessions Presents… is a unique series of intimate, acoustic musical evenings that aims to bring a deeper community awareness to the great work of our social service agencies. Created and hosted by local musicians “Kandy & Iain” each session is also staged to support & increase the synergistic relationship and awareness of the work of The Center for Mindful Grieving. Music communicates in ways that words alone never could. The mission of the partnered organization is communicated through songs that uniquely tell the story of the work & the impact made to the community. “Kandy & Iain” offers an impactful delivery that facilitates the audience to connect with the mission in a way that traditional fundraisers lack.

Suncoast Sessions Presents… has produced shows for the Child Protection Center and The Florida Center to date. New shows are in production for social service agencies who understand the impact of grief, support the mission of The Center for Mindful Grieving, & have seen the benefit to offering their constituents a unique way to “friend-raise”. This has not only increased deeper awareness for the work these organizations do, but it has also increased the understanding of the importance of attending to grief issues their clients are facing & in turn considering ways to work with The Center for Mindful Grieving. Each agency gained donations & increased their contact mailing list for future donation solicitations.  The narrative of the organization’s accomplishments as well as the issues they address is interwoven throughout the show and the audience has been left with a memorable experience that influences who they may choose to support financially in the future.

Long Term Success Suncoast Sessions Presents… is poised to be an alternative to the traditional way of fundraising and “friend-raising” for many years to come. The sold-out success of previous shows and the feedback from organizations who have benefitted from having this personalized production experience speaks for itself. Organizations report having received new donations, increased awareness, additional mailing list members, as well as an increase in employee/volunteer job satisfaction. An important facet of Suncoast Sessions Presents… is our “Pay It Forward” requirement which ensures that the organization that has benefitted from the experience identify and nominate a social service agency in the community that should be the next in line for a Suncoast Sessions Presents… production.
Program Success Monitoring

The program works and is monitored through the enormous feedback and requests for a Suncoast Session Presents… production for local organizations. The Center for Mindful Grieving is poised to bring this program to four (4) social service agencies in our community this calendar year. (2016)

Program Success Examples

Suncoast Sessions Presents… has been an enormous success with back to back sold out shows, increased awareness, and financial donations made to the featured agencies. Testimonials include:

"Many thanks to Kandy & Iain for the benefit concert, Roots and Wings, at Florida Studio Theatre last Saturday night! Can't wait to post pictures, but even pictures will not sufficiently tell you all what an amazing evening it was. As Kandy said, "The evening's music was picked specifically to walk the audience through the trials and triumphs of childhood and parenthood." Each song sang by Kandy and played by Iain on guitar expertly expressed and built awareness about the realities of child abuse. CPC sincerely wishes to thank Kandy & Iain for choosing CPC as the first charity in the launch of their Suncoast Sessions. You deserved the standing ovation! There are many more to come, for sure!" - The Child Protection Center

Grief is not a mental health experience, it is a human experience that affects the entire family system. When you are grieving and financially challenged it is even more difficult to adjust to the responsibilities of life after the loss. There are many camps available throughout the nation that attend to the needs of bereaved children specifically. The Grief Healing & Life Transformation Retreat for Bereaved Adults offered by The Center for Mindful Grieving will facilitate a 2-day (overnight) workshop retreat designed to move parents or anyone in a kinship care role who has been impacted by grief caused by death through the grief experience in a holistic, life transformational manner with the HeART Therapy Method™. The Center for Mindful Grieving is dedicated to bringing transformational healing modalities to the at-risk, economically challenged, and disenfranchised of our community.

Budget $90,000

Short Term Success

Participants will be empowered with psychoeducational and holistic tools proven to aid in the adjustment to life after the death of a loved one. Participants will experience a decrease in grief emotions and emotionally paining energy which will enable them to better attend to their needs and the needs of the children in their lives. It will also promote an increase in systemic, generational success to bereavement camps offered exclusively for children. Participants will also receive maintenance support for one-year post retreat experience to enhance the retreat experience.

Long Term Success

Healing & Life Transformation Retreat participants will become better equipped to move through grief and residual emotional pain caused by the death of a loved one. Participants will also be better equipped to support the emotions of the children in their lives who have been impacted by the death of a loved one. This systemic, multi-generational approach to attending to grief and emotional pain provides a decrease in the propensity for negative behavioral, familial, and academic outcomes and increases the outcomes for long-term positive adjustment to life after the death of a loved one.

Program Success Monitoring

Participants would be monitored through The Center for Mindful Grieving’s Systemic Case Management: Comprehensive Case Management and Follow-Up program as outlined. Participants would also be invited back for a Follow-Up Retreat one year post-participation to identify areas of healing, transformation, and growth as well as areas needing attention.

Program Success Examples

Positive outcomes for children who have attended grief camps have been documented by organizations like The Moyer Foundation and The Mark Wandall Foundation. The positive outcomes of adults who have experienced The HeART Therapy Method™ have been documented by Life THROUGH Loss™ clients. This would be a pioneering program satisfying an enormous gap in working with the family system as it experiences grief and emotional pain as the result of the death of a loved one.
