Impact Statement

Top accomplishments for 2015

1. We were able to have one of our football teams and one of our cheerleading

teams advance to regionals.

2. The overall GPA in the Sun Devil’s organization was 90%.

3. We were able to provide scholarships for 20% of our participants.

Top goals for 2016

1. To be able to provide a positive experience for the maximum number of youth participants at our 12 levels of football and cheer.

2. To improve relationships within the Sarasota business community in order to maintain financial sustainability.

3. To be able to expand diversity within our board.

Needs Statement

1) Participant Safety: We ensure the safety of our players by having our equipment refurbished $6000.  Additional, mats, pads, and equipment are needed $11,500.

2) Scholarships: The Sun Devils organization provides football and cheer scholarships to youths within the Sarasota. In 2016, we anticipate 50 scholarships to ensure that all children within the community can participate. One registration is $295, thus $14,750 would include all community members.

3) Community Pride: The Sun Devil open areas are exposed to the powerful sun and elements. Our stands, visitor stands, and handicap/food area need canopy covers and concrete pads to ensure the safety, comfort, and compliance of our organization. $50,000.

4) Improve and Expand existing facilities: The Sun devils facilities are out dated, in poor condition, and have insufficient space to meets the needs of the all participants. Contractors estimate that $115/sqft is needed to expand the facility (adding 2000 sqft is $230,000) and $28.75/sqft to refurbish our existing space ($57,500).

5) Artificial Turf: Our fields are used almost every day and this use leads to many issues that could cause participants injury. Advanced artificial turf would significantly reduce the chance of an injury. Estimate $800,000.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

The Sarasota Sun Devils organization’s mission is to inspire developing student athletes within a safe place to learn, grow, and enjoy competitive sports, while nourishing scholastic excellence and encouraging a strong work ethic.  I believe that challenging our children to excel in areas they are drawn to, such as youth sports, is critical to their development as student athletes.   Our organization is driven by talented volunteers that selflessly donate their time and expertise to help our community’s youth.  We believe that competitive team sports provide a unique environment to allow student athletes to build social skills and that enables them to consistently show good sportsmanship.   We have seen that student athletes who participate over several years continually build a strong work ethic, which led to self-confidence and a strong self-image.  Competitive team sports also provide the opportunity to improve problem solving skills, focus, decision making, etc… Most importantly, team sports require a level of commitment and planning to be academically successful.   In turn, our participants build and reinforce their study habits for future success at all levels and careers.  Our goals are to ensure that this opportunity is available to all children in our community and that our families, participants, and guests have a safe place that proudly represents the Sarasota Community.

Programs
Description Since 1987, the Sarasota Sun Devils Pop Warner Programs philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. At every level, Pop Warner programs seek to develop well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football, cheerleading, and dance but also the importance of education in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound character while having a good time.  Sarasota Sun Devils Pop Warner provides youth league football and cheerleading instruction, and recognizes first and second team Academic All-American scholars and athletes, and provides scholarships for higher education on a yearly basis. PWLS Regional Championships are held in four or five (subject to Region) tackle football divisions for both cheerleading and dance. Regional Championship teams/squads move on to the Pop Warner Super Bowl to determine National Champions in football, cheerleading and dance.

Short Term Success

Sarasota Sun Devils organization is committed to inspiring developing student athletes. Pop Warner is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. Student athletes face many challenges that their peers do not. For example, our student athletes spend over 20 hours a week either in practice or in athletic completion, time that their peers do not. As an organization, we nourish scholastic excellence and encourage a strong work ethic with our student athletes. Within a season, our student athletes acquire time management skills, work ethic, and positive reinforcement that they can achieve superior academics. In 2015, our average GPA for our participants was 90%, which is outstanding. In addition, our 2015 season had 13.3% of participants that qualified as academic All Americans with GPAs that exceeded 96%. Ultimately, we believe each season builds on this foundation of time management and work ethic to give our participants a great chance to succeed in life.

Long Term Success Today, over 325,000 kids participate in the football, cheerleading, and dance programs that Pop Warner has to offer. Annually, over 3,500 scholar-athletes are recognized as the Academic All-Americans and more than $250,000 in scholarships has been awarded through the Scholarship program to deserving student-athletes. Record numbers of people are show up each year for the annual Super Bowl Week at Disney.
Program Success Monitoring All participants are REQUIRED a minimum amount of plays in all games. These plays are independently recorded and signed after every game.  All report cards are sent to PWLS for evaluation and determination of All-American status.
Program Success Examples
In addition to providing the coaching to our children that will enable them to succeed at the high school level, many of our participants are learning the life lessons that will prepare them for other life challenges.  We are very proud of our team's success throughout the years.

Program Comments by Organization The Sarasota Sun Devils are very proud of the success our association has achieved since it was established in 1987.  We are a 100% volunteer run organization, whereby NO Board Members, Coaches or volunteers receive ANY compensation or discounts for their services.  In addition, we are very proud of building great athletes that have been able to move onto professional sports.  Likewise, we have been successful in guiding our participants to become amazing contributors to society.  In fact, many former participants have come back to volunteer for the Dun Devils as an adult.  In addition, we are very proud of the recognition we received for having our Association average a 90% GPA across all our 2015 participants.

Governance Comments by Organization

One of the organization’s primary challenges is to consistently find parents who are willing to dedicate their time and leadership capabilities as board members. It is critical that the Board be comprised of families representing different age levels and representing both our football and cheerleading programs. In recent years, the organization has made a concerted effort to recruit board members with younger children in our programs to help achieve long term and sustainable leadership in the organization. With the proper diversity of age and background of Board membership, we can ensure Board continuity that will allow the organization to continually improve over time and provide a consistently better experience for the children and families in the Sarasota community.

Another organizational challenge is to improve our relationships and partnerships with the business community. This will improve our capability to fundraise to support our programs. In an effort to achieve this goal, in 2016 we created a business partnership and fundraising coordinator position on the Board of Directors. We specifically recruited an individual with this type of background to fill this very important role. And while we have identified this as an organizational challenge, this area also represents a tremendous opportunity for the organization.

We are a member of the Pop Warner Little Scholars Organization which is the largest youth football and cheerleading organization in America. We are a leading organization in our Conference (The Peace River Conference). In 2016 two of our current Board members have been asked to serve on the Peace River Conference Board of Directors. This is a tremendous honor and opportunity for the Sun Devil organization to govern and lead the approximate 4,000 student athletes that participate in our Conference. As a positive leader in our Conference the Sun Devils are in a strong position to represent the Sarasota community and the thousands of children who participate in Pop Warner across all of Southwest Florida.

Lastly, our greatest opportunity is to continue to support the children of the Sarasota community by providing them with a positive environment to learn, grow and compete and become the young men and women that make us all proud. The Sarasota Sun Devils have been in the Sarasota community since 1987 and this has always been, and still is, our primary goal and our greatest opportunity.

Financial Comments by Organization

The Financial challenges for the Sarasota Sun Devils are; 1) Competition from other sports. 2) Competition from Football organizations who offer less expensive programs but do not offer the same focus on player safety that Pop Warner mandates. 3) Many organizations who offer less upfront cost but charge more for advancement in their programs. 4) Constant training and the expense of Coaches and support people in order to keep our players as safe as possible. 5) Offering scholarships to needy children so everyone has an opportunity to experience a positive and structured environment. 6) Retaining enough revenues to improve our facility and grounds to ensure a safe environment that Sarasota can take pride in.

We are addressing these issues by reaching out to the community to explain the positive impact we have on Children who are able to participate in this wonderful organization. We stress to the community at large how we are able to help children get along in a well-structured disciplined environment and further how by working hard and following a structured program they are capable of many wonderful things. The Sun Devil organization is letting Children and Parents know how we go to extreme measures to help keep the children as safe as possible in either Football or Cheer. This opportunity is not free from cost, therefore so we ask for their help in promoting our program. To date, we have been doing most of our fund raising through in house efforts but going forward we are going to be taking a more proactive approach of reaching out to the Sarasota Community and groups that are looking to help promote a structured environment for our community’s youth. We hope to continue to grow our programs to provide the opportunity to all of our community so everyone’s children grow into positive, productive, and self-empowered young men and women. We are a family oriented organization that believes in our mission and that all children deserve this opportunity.
