Impact Statement

2015 Accomplishments:

1.     Formalized the operations and governance of the organization.

2.     Raised sufficient funds to address all qualified grant requests made.

3.     Made employees of the Sheriff’s Office aware of the Foundation.

4.     Formalized the process for application, communication and grant award.

5.    Established a connection with Season of Sharing, via the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, for additional resources for qualified grantees.

In late 2015, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Charitable Foundation, Inc. received its first grant request from a law enforcement officer whose wife was suffering from ongoing long-term medical needs. While most of her medical expenses were covered, the travel expense for out of town specialists were not.  A grant was made, and an additional grant was made through collaborative efforts of Season of Sharing.

The 2016 goals are to:

1.     Increase the awareness within the Sheriff’s Office.

2.     Raise $25,000 in donations through direct requests, the Giving Partner Challenge, and its annual Sporting Clays Tournament.  (The Board of Directors will continue its pledge to donate 100% of the organization’s operating costs to ensure that this full amount is available for granting purposes.)

3.     Formalize a Communications Plan.

Needs Statement
1.   Volunteers for the Annual Sporting Clays Tournament.
2.   Donors willing to commit to an recurring annual gift of a minimum of $250.
Background Statement

Law enforcement foundations are common in Florida, but the focus of each varies greatly.  Our complete focus will be on those employees of the Sheriff's Office who are going through individual or family crises. Crises not only impact individuals, but the Office as well.  Many Sarasota County residents feel a special connection with these first responders, and want to help if extraordinary needs arise.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

I have always had a great deal of respect for those members of the Sheriff’s Office who put their lives on the line for people like me and my family.  Establishing this Foundation, which provides some protection for all employees of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office in their time of need, is my way of paying back.

Law enforcement foundations are not uncommon in Florida.  Our complete focus will be on those employees of the Sheriff's Office who are going through individual or family crises. Crises not only impact individuals, but the Office as well.

I was moved when I learned of an experience faced by a Deputy whose child had a brain tumor.  Wear and tear on a vehicle traveling to frequent chemo treatments and expensive deductibles take its toll on a family.  Many Sarasota County residents feel a special connection with these first responders, and want to help if extraordinary needs arise.  I do.

Our dedicated board has agreed to personally cover all organizational overhead, which ensures that every dollar we raise is available should a need arise.  We hope this approach assures our donors of our commitment to a well-run, lean foundation that will use every dollar donated toward its mission – helping families in need.

Short Term Success
Sarasota County is best served by the Sheriff's Office if its employees and employee families are leading productive, stable and healthy lives. When family challenges affect an employee, the impact is often felt in the entire Office. A employee seeking financial assistance for a qualified need in a time of crisis will be less stressed, more productive, and less likely to suffer financially. Financial stress can lead to adults missing work, children missing school, loss of viable transportation, homelessness, etc.

The Foundation's financial grants are meant to alleviate such financial stress. In the very unlikely event that a Sheriff's employee should be lost in the line of duty, the Foundation will assist in any related extraordinary expenses that would not be covered by the Office or insurance.
Long Term Success
With the collaborative arrangement with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County's Season of Sharing, the assistance available is extended greatly beyond a cash grant, and may include family counseling, aid with mortgages or rent or utilities, scholarships, child care, etc.

The founding directors of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Charitable Foundation, as well as many local citizens, feel that this is the least we can offer to these men and women, and those in support of them, who risk their lives for us every day of their working lives.
Program Success Monitoring Only feedback from the families we serve, and feedback through the Sheriff's Office - that which is not confidential -- is our means of feedback.
Program Success Examples To date, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Charitable Foundation, Inc., has contributed to one Sergeant's family who has been affected by a serious illness.  We feel that the financial assistance has provided a period of relief while successful medical assistance continues to be sought.

Governance Comments by Organization
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Charitable Foundation, Inc. is committed to the highest level of good governance.  We want to ensure:

1.   We are organizationally compliant with all agencies.
2.   We manage funds and donations with the greatest of duty.
3.   We minimize overhead.
4.   We have systems in place to react quickly to a need should it arise.

To that end, we have prepared a comprehensive organizational notebook that serves the following purposes:

1.   Documents all procedure, licenses, certifications, etc.
2.   Documents all financial accounting.
3.   Documents the processes to ensure that every grant is processed in exactly the same way.
4.   Provides a method of new board member training.
5.   Allows for an annual review by a certified public accounting firm, as an audit is unnecessary and too costly for an organization of our size.
6.   Provides for seamless succession planning for staff and board.
