Impact Statement
Our top accomplishments from the past year would be relocating the service center; serving over 70 children/families that benefited from our Speech Clinic; sponsoring numerous fund raising events to support the Speech Clinic; striving to keep the individual rates to the 2016 approved rates and increasing the number of hours with the student as the school reduce the services. For 2018 we are discussing the possibility of becoming an United Way agency, establishing a Pay Pal account and upgrading our PR programs.
Expanding the number served in our Speech clinic by being able to expand the hours, upgrade our Club's insurance package, retaining both a female and male professional therapist and expand our fund-raising activities.
Needs Statement
1-Provide more PR and marketing materials for the Speech Clinic ($600)
2-Provide equipment for the student to be able to see and hear themselves talking. ($900)
3-Technology -- purchase additional apps for speech therapy. ($360)
4-Hire a part-time independent contractor to administer the Speech Clinic. ($4,000)
5-Purchase testing supplies. ($300)

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

The Sertoma Club of Venice is a service club made up of men and women who live, work and/or are retired in the Venice, Florida area. We are a part of Sertoma International, which was formed over 100 years ago in Kansas City, Missouri, and whose purpose is “To meet the needs of communities through volunteer service.” Our Club was started in 1976 by like-minded community leaders who shared a common goal of providing meaningful service to the Venice community and making it a better place for all to live and work. It has since grown to become the largest club by membership in all of Sertoma International.

The primary emphasis of Sertoma International and our club is well stated in our Mission Statement: “To improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support.” We do this through the funding and operation of the Venice Sertoma Speech Clinic, which for 30+ years has been located in space generously donated by the Venice YMCA at its facility on Center Road in Venice. This year, we are moving to new and improved facilities at the Children First facility located on Gulf Coast Boulevard in Venice, which will allow the opportunity for further growth and the ability to serve more children. While we do collect co-pays from those children with the ability to pay, no one is denied service for financial reasons – hence our emphasis on fundraising activities throughout the year to make this possible.

The operation of the Speech Clinic has not been without challenges, however. We recently terminated our contractual relationship with a therapy service provider which was providing staffing for the clinic, based on what we perceived to be conflicting goals and direction. We now are contracting directly with two qualified therapists, who are steadily building our numbers back up. We are very pleased with the new arrangement with these dedicated individuals who, coupled with our new facilities, make us confident of continued growth and quality therapy services at the Speech Clinic. Another challenge we face is getting the word out. We work with all local schools to let them know of the available services at the Speech Clinic, and offer screenings of students to determine needs. We constantly strive to build a referral base, because our worst fear is that a child goes without services simply because their family doesn’t know what’s available.

While the Speech Clinic is our major project, we also contribute to multiple causes in and around Venice which provide services and activities for the area children and youth, including Little League, the YMCA, Loveland Center, Rotary Futures and many other worthwhile endeavors. Our Club is proud to provide monthly male and female Student of the Month Awards and an Educator of the Month Award at Venice High School throughout the year, and at the end of the school year we present $2,500 scholarships to both the male and female Students of the Year at VHS, and a $1,000 honorarium to the Educator of the Year.

As with any volunteer organization, we are constantly striving to keep our members motivated to service. This can sometimes be a challenge, as our members are busy people involved in their jobs, their families, and this community, serving in many capacities outside Sertoma. Despite our size, we engender camaraderie in our various fundraising and service projects, such that members want to sign up and be a part of something worthwhile. And when we get together for a common purpose, it is no exaggeration to say we have FUN!

To a man and woman, if you asked a member he or she would tell you they are proud to be a member of the Venice Sertoma Club because we make a difference in our community, and have a good time while we’re doing it.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
Sertoma Club of Venice is a 100% volunteer organization with two part-time paid professional independent contractors for the Speech Clinic.
Description Each month Sertoma honors a high school student and teacher for outstanding achievement. Each year a $2,500 scholarship is given to a student and a $1,000 financial stipen to the teacher.  High School Principal and a committee consisting of a Sertoma representative and High School Staff (Department Heads) select the students and teachers. This is based on student/teacher achievement and participation. The Program Success Monitoring consist of having the Principal and Department Heads involved in the selection process. Each award winner is notified by the school office staff and completes a nomination form and a biographical essay.  The essay then becomes the press release and their introduction at the monthly Sertoma meeting. At the monthly meeting the winner receives a framed certificate and gift card. Oversight of this program is provided by the Program Chairperson, School Administration and the Sertoma Board of Directors.

Short Term Success Teachers receive a financial reward from a community non-profit which the teacher can spend as they wish. The student also receives a scholarship for attending a college of their choice. The selection of the teacher/student is made by representatives of both Sertoma and the School system administration. Many of the students send back notices of how they are doing in school and their appreciation of the award.
Long Term Success Venice is a small town and it is easy to keep track of the students as they progress through their college years.
Program Success Monitoring The School Administration and Sertoma's committee for this activity have been doing this for years and the routine/process has been established.
Program Success Examples Each month we are impressed with the achievements of the students we are honoring. We select 9 students a year (during the school months) and give one of the students a scholarship during their awards night.

Short Term Success Children are given an interview with the parent/guardian, then tested to determine the best use of the Sertoma resources. The primary philanthropy is the Sertoma Speech Clinic of Venice, which is operated solely by the fund-raising efforts of members. Since opening, the Clinic has served more than 1,000 local children.
Long Term Success The Sertmoa Club of Venice was chartered in 1975 as part of Sertoma International, a leading nonprofit civic service organization founded in 1912. Sertomans band together to foster friendships, to identify neds and to provide help directly to their communities, in this case, the Sertoma Speech Clinic. The Sertoma Club of Venice is made of of professional men and women dedicated to serving that purpose.
Program Success Monitoring There are two areas of monitoring, first (and most important) the student and next is program monitoring. Students will be monitored by entrance testing, parent reviews and progress through established workbooks/assignments. Monitoring will continue to be written confidential evaluations of the participant, individual tracking and increasing the number of referrals. The Clinic is staffed by licensed speech therapist(s). A monthly report is provided to the Club's Chairperson and the entire Club at a monthly meeting. The report will include the number of children served, the number of therapy sessions, the co-pay collections, any receivables and the number of children on the waiting list for services. All checks require two (2) signatures.
Program Success Examples As the County School system reduces their services for children with special needs, the Sertoma Speech Clinic becomes a desired community asset. By accessing the Sertoma Club of Venice web-site and clicking on the Speech Clinic, the reader will find numerous testimonials on this excellent community resource. Due to the increase in demand, the Speech Clinic is moving into the same building with Children First to expand the hours and provide weekend access. Years later, Sertoma has received letters from students that gave received services at the Clinic thanking the Sertoma members for what they have helped them with.

As the sponsor of the Speech Clinic for South Sarasota we are expanding, relocating for more flexible hours and weekend appointments and purchasing more educational materials/equipment.The new address of the Speech Clinic is 800 Gulf Coast Blvd. in Venice, 34285.
The volunteer administrator of the Speech Clinic will be working on a brochure for schools (PTA's and teachers) informing them about the benefits of the Sertoma Speech Clinic. There is a lack of these services for children and children need more therapy than what the insurance companies will cover. Sertoma has two professional part-time independent contractors assisting with the Speech Clinic.
