Impact Statement

Like Ludwig van Beethoven, we believe ‘Music can change the world’. At Pine View, the music program has a positive impact on our students.  Children who participate in bands learn to trust, to have discipline and focus and to feel a sense of belonging.  Over 200 Pine View students participate in the band every year. The following are our most recent accomplishments (2016-2017 school year).

- The Florida All State Bands auditions are opportunities awarded to the top 2% of band students in the State. Three students were selected to the All State Bands.

- At the Music Performance Assessments (MPA) events, Pine View Students achieved the following:

  • 75 Pine View students were awarded Superior Medals in solo/ensemble with two students receiving Superiors with distinction recognition.
  • Straight Superior ratings (including student conductor) for 8th grade band.
  • Excellent rating and Superior in sight reading for Wind Ensemble.
  • Straight Superiors for Jazz Band (7 years straight at MPA)

Background Statement

Incorporated in 2009, the Pine View Band Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  Every year, the Pine View Band attracts 200 students into the Band program; this is about ten percent of the entire Pine View student body.  The students are placed in one of five bands:  they start band classes in Grade 7 and progress in successive years to 8th Grade band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz band.

In 2008, Victor Mongillo joined Pine View as the Band Director and the Band Program has been on an upwards trajectory of excellence and achievement ever since. The band program has been improving each year as more outside resources help our young musicians.  Mr. Mongillo has been able to bring in professional musicians to offer small group instruction and coaching to students.

In addition to classroom instruction and rehearsal, band students go on band trips. In April 2015, the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Bands went to New York City to compete in a competitive festival. They also travel locally to participate in the Music Performance Assessments (MPA) events where they are evaluated by external judges scoring them on key metrics of musicianship.

The needs of the Pine View Band are supported by membership dues from the Belong program, donations, and fundraisers.  The Belong program is operated by Band Boosters, a group of volunteer band parents.

The support of volunteers and donors has paid great dividends in our band's performance at music competitions and festivals.  This in turn has led to increased confidence and pride in our student band members.

From Victor Mongillo (Director of Bands)

As Director of Bands at Pine View School, my greatest joy is to witness success for all of the students.  This success may take the form of realizing a quality instruments the Boosters were able to afford them, coaching that helped a young player achieve what once seemed unreachable, or seeing the look on their faces when offered a scholarship to travel and participate in a memory that will last a lifetime.

Programs
Description

About ten percent of the Pine View students plays in one of the five Pine View Bands, amounting to about 200 students each year. But there is only one Pine View music teacher for all of these students. With a little help from some professional musicians, the Director of Bands is able to provide individualized music coaching to students. These accomplished professional coaches provide small group instruction across all ages of students and instruments. The results have been impressive and of unquestionable benefit especially for the younger students who are starting their journey in grades 7 and 8.

Financials Comments
Financial Comments by Organization One opportunity will be the creation of an endowment fund in 2016 to support the music coaching program.  Our biggest challenge is the perception that Pine View students, as gifted students, have the financial means to easily support a music program or that all gifted students have financial means to go on band competitions. There are a number of band members that would not be able to participate in the band or go on band trips without some financial assistance.  It is a challenge to change this perception while fundraising.
Financial Comments by Foundation Financial information taken from Federal 990-EZ.  Contributions include foundation and corporate support as they are not separately stated on the tax return. Financial information for 2016 taken solely from the unaudited compilations as the Federal tax return was not available at time of review.
