Impact Statement
Accomplishment in 2015
We have built temporary kennels at the facility we are leasing.
We currently have 5 dogs in training.
We are in the process of developing protocols for our first study to determine the accuracy of canine scent detection in breast and lung cancer. The study will be conducted using human saliva and breath samples.
We are currently in the process of developing relationships with Physicians and Research Scientist involved in cancer research and microbiology.
We are training our first Diabetic Alert Dog for a 12 year old girl suffering from severe type I Diabetes.

Goals for 2015 – 2016
Conduct our first  study “Accuracy of Canine Scent Detection for Breast and Lung Cancer, using saliva and breath samples”.
Build a training and testing building on the site we are leasing.
Create a software program to track the statistics of each dog.
Create a data base for scent detection research.
Continue training and placing Diabetic Alert Dogs.
Continue research in the accuracy of dogs detecting low blood sugar and ketoacidosis in humans.
Needs Statement

Programs
Description

We will be conducting medical research studies using canine scent detection to identify breath and saliva samples that are positive for various types of cancer. The dogs will be trained using operant conditioning.

All dogs will be raised in homes and come to our facility for training.

Budget $150,000
Category Medical Research, General/Other Cancer Research
Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Yes
Population Served Adults At-Risk Populations General/Unspecified
Short Term Success Participant in this study will be volunteers that donate breath and saliva samples. They will benefit from that knowledge that they are helping researchers to develop a non-invasive way of detecting cancer and other life threatening diseases.
Long Term Success If our hypothesis is proven correct, this research could lead to a non-invasive way of detecting early stages of cancer. As of now there is no cure for cancer, early detection is our best line of defense. This research has the potential to save thousands of lives.
Program Success Monitoring We will constantly be tracking the training of our dogs and their success and failure rates.
Program Success Examples We are a new organization and have not yet conducted our first study. We are confident our research will yield valuable results, due to the success of previous research studies done by other organizations. Example: "Diagnostic Accuracy of Canine Scent Detection in Early- and Late Stage Lung and Breast Cancer." Michael McCulloch, Tadeusz Jezierski,
Description The purpose of this program is to train dogs to the odor emitted from the body of a person with  low blood sugar. Once the dog learns to recognize this odor they are then trained to alert the person with the low blood sugar. Example: A diabetic alert dog would wake its owner in the middle of the night if his or her blood sugar was low. This allows the person to get the proper care immediately.
Budget $45,000
Category Medical Research, General/Other Diabetes Research
Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Yes
Population Served Children and Youth (0 - 19 years) Adults General/Unspecified
Short Term Success This program will help its participants live a more independent life with a sense of security that the dog will alert them of a pending low blood sugar episode.
Long Term Success Individuals who receive these dogs will live more independent lives and be able to sleep through the night knowing if their sugar drops the dog will alert them.
Program Success Monitoring We are continually testing our dogs in training. Dogs that have already been places will receive site visits to assess their progress.
Program Success Examples Individuals who receive these dogs will live more independent lives and be able to sleep through the night knowing if their sugar drops the dog will alert them.
