Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
The real estate is owned by the South Gate Community Association, a voluntary community association.  Because Association membership is not mandatory, participation by property owners and renters is low.  Since its founding in 1956, the Association has had funding problems.

As with many older buildings, extensive restoration is required.  To this end, the Foundation is working with the Association and the greater community by providing tax deductible opportunities to restore and preserve this piece of historic Sarasota, on land which was previously part of Bertha Palmer's orange grove.

The facility has been a popular public venue for weddings, parties, meetings, etc. through the years.  We want to raise public awareness of the Community House, improve it and provide future generations with the opportunity to appreciate and use these facilities located beside the scenic Phillippi Creek.
Programs
Description As a relatively new organization we seek to raise awareness, appreciation of, and support for our goals of restoring and preserving the South Gate Community House.  To accomplish this we will be working to educate the general public about the significance of the SGCH as an example of Sarasota's Mid-Century Modern Architecture and Victor Lundy, the architect who played a major role during that period.  We will use many methods to achieve this: articles in our "NEWSletter" as well as the "South Gator," the community newsletter, will reach the general public.  Future plans call for periodic lectures and other events by experts in Sarasota's architectural history.  Through our efforts to make the public aware of this "Jewel on the Phillippi Creek," we envision that our long-term goal of restoring and preserving this historic building will be accomplished.  A gala celebrating the 60th anniversary of the SGCH and Victor Lundy's 94th birthday is planned for January 2017.

Short Term Success While this program is in its infancy, the effects of educating the public are already being observed.  Daily, visitors to the SGCH state that they have "lived in Sarasota for years and driven around South Gate Circle daily, but I never knew that the Community House was back here." We identified the need for new signage and our first project was to replace a nearly three decade old sign.  A donor has stepped forward to provide funding to purchase a new electronic LED, computer-programmed entry sign identifying the SGCH as a historic Lundy building.  It draws awareness to passing motorists and welcomes visitors to the property.
Long Term Success The long-term success of this program will be observed the day we stand in front of the completely restored and renovated South Gate Community House and cut the ribbon re-dedicating it for use by the South Gate community and Sarasota, by young and young at heart, for the next sixty (60) years.
Program Success Monitoring We will be able to measure our success with this program as we whittle away at our "wish list" one project at a time.
Program Success Examples Enthusiasm is running high.  We have created a high-energy Board of Directors.  Our first project, to replace the aging and decrepit entry sign, has been extremely successful with a donor presenting a check in the amount of $13,000 to fully fund the new sign.  Through continued "public awareness" efforts, we look forward to reaching our stated mission.
Comments
Program Comments by Organization Our goal is to educate residents of South Gate and the Sarasota community on the existence of this building and its importance in the history of architecture.  We hope to cultivate a sense of pride which will lead to involvement in its restoration and preservation.  The building and grounds, designated as a historical site, are a popular venue available to the public for use for small events.  It is also just nice to sit on the banks of the Phillippi Creek and fish on a lazy summer afternoon.
