Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

A note from Kelly Trautwein, President, Chairman of the board, Executive director:

Equally Confident Foundation wants to make an impact in the treatment of the LGBTQ community. Martial arts is a powerful skill that not only teaches the physicality of the sport, but also teaches core attributes that build a person’s self-worth and confidence. I see Equally Confident changing the way the public perceives martial arts. While helping so many people, my vision is to see martial arts become main stream.

Programs
Description The goal of the martial arts training is the LGBTQ youth/young adult student to find a supportive community. Within that supportive martial art community, the youth/young adult will work on skills of self-defense, fitness and mental strength to help them overcome possible familiar rejection and societal prejudice. Training in martial arts empowers and enhances each student!
Budget $50,000
Category Human Services, General/Other Services for Specific Populations
Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Yes
Population Served Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgendered Children and Youth (0 - 19 years) Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgendered
Short Term Success The student’s consistent training will help them flourish and begin to trust the process. Each time a student advances (by testing for a new rank) growth happens.
Long Term Success The ultimate changes that will result from this program is an increased self-worth, a sense of community, and the confidence, as well as ability, to stand up to bullying. Martial arts isn't just about the physical training, but when a student truly commits to becoming a martial artist, their lives will be transformed.
Program Success Monitoring As the student progress, Equally Confident will monitor the students’ progress by keeping in contact with school and/or student to see if that student is advancing.
Program Success Examples
Testimonial from LGBT student:

"I can only be thankful for the Taekwondo community that I grew up with. Having just one group that accepts you gives you the confidence that there are places for people like us in society. Most children don’t have the confidence or awareness to be outnumbered by an opposing opinion yet still feel correct in who they are and what they believe. I can only imagine how differently I would feel about my self-image if I didn’t have that after school activity."
