Background Statement

Founders Ann Morrison and Blake Walton have been awarded prizes during 2012-13 at United Solo Festival (NYC), the world's largest festival for solo performers. Ann mentioned to them that she wished that Sarasota might someday develop a retreat facility (like The Hermitage) to support solo performers in their creative work. The USF management suggested that developing a Solo Festival would be a good way of starting.

Ann and Blake performed at SaraSolo 2015, along with thirteen other solo artists: internationally recognized mime, Bill Bowers, comic luminary Christine Alexander, renowned actor Roxanne Fay, graduates of the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, and many local favorites. SaraSolo 2016 continued the annual festival, presenting 16 performers over a two-weekend perido.

As our Vision Statement puts it: "We believe in affordable theatre that supports diversity, collaboration, and the transformative power of intimate theatre for both artists and audiences. Among other activities, we may become involved in festivals, fringe theatre, educational outreach, video, and internet."

Our SaraSolo Festivals provide low-cost ($15 per ticket) opportunities for audience members to experience a broad variety of live theater, many for the first time. In addition, there will be lectures, workshops, and master classes.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
As with most new organizations, we expect to have organizational challenges in our first few years. These include funding, attracting board members, and gaining community awareness.  We have been able to attract significant audiences to our performances and are "in the black."

Short Term Success Because of the low ticket prices, we hope to attract audience members who are insufficiently familiar with live theater.
Long Term Success We hope this program will pave the way for a more adventurous Solo Play Festival in 2017 and/or a Fringe Festival.
Program Success Monitoring We will evaluate success based on attendance at the various plays as well as feedback from attendees.
Program Success Examples SaraSolo Festival has had two successful years, January/February 2015 with 14 solo performers and January/February 2016, with 16 solo performers and scheduled for January/February 2017 with 22 solo performers, 11 coming from New York.  Attendance has increased each year and we are looking for another increased year for 2017.

Program Comments by Organization
In addition to planning for expanded SaraSolo Festivals and performances, we will investigate programs to assist solo performers to develop their works, as well as working with solo artists who wish to participate in the United Solo Festival in New York City. In future years, we hope to provide  retreat opportunities for solo artists as well as a "fringe festival" locally.
