Background Statement
How many times have you thought, “I wish someone would have told me that before” or “I wish someone would have given me a manual”? Finally, after 90,000 clinical hours, we (Dr. Christopher Cortman and Dr. Harold Shinitzky), have created The Social Black Belt prevention curriculum based upon our recently published book, Your Mind: An Owner’s Manual for a Better Life (Career Press, 2009).
The Social Black Belt curriculum summarizes the ten most common struggles people have in life. Our goal with The Social Black Belt is to empower youth with healthy, productive and adaptive coping skills which they can use throughout life. We know from research that fostering the development of specific skills can prevent involvement in at-risk behaviors.
Upon completion of our initial semester long intervention at Venice High School in 2011, results revealed that The Social Black Belt students attained statistically significant increases in their knowledge, attitude and behavior. It also indicated that the students were now more aware of the social perceptions when taking risks and the benefits associated with healthy decision making.
The students became more confident about their ability to positively deal with their emotions and life situation. They were now armed with a vast array of prevention tools that provide a framework to life. These powerful skills include managing and understanding their emotions, how to set healthy boundaries, developing and utilizing positive values/goals/and self-worth, addressing and resolving impulsive behaviors, not being influenced by negative peer pressure, practical steps of civility, and the ability to heal and move beyond painful experiences.
Students who participated in The Social Black Belt prevention curriculum reported that they felt the program was beneficial for them. Across the board, The Social Black Belt students asserted that this course and the prevention material should become required curriculum offered to all students. Their teacher also shared this perception.
By implementing The Social Black Belt prevention curriculum, it is our aim to increase emotional wellness and provide an overall positive sense of self for today’s youth. The acquisition of these integral skills will lead to an increase in student achievement and graduation rates, a reduction in teen pregnancy, and change the overall attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of adolescents.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

The Social Black Belt has been an integral part of my personal emotional growth and development. The curriculum has my own stamp of approval from the perspective of a teacher, social worker, therapist, mother, and consumer. Three of the unique differences that I believe propel the Social Black Belt are:

  • Inclusivity - This is curriculum is for humans.  The framework developed for teachers to present this wonderful foundation of emotional intelligence can be utilized across age, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic diversities. It allows teachers to choose which examples are developmentally appropriate and meaningful to their students.
  • Continuity - Emotional development is a journey that we take every day.The curriculum is a 10-14 week program that has been formulated for hour long weekly lessons; however, it has been incorporated into 20 minute lessons 3 times per week with the same positive results. All students respond well to learning the ten psychological "truths" but invariably it is important to subject them to these concepts throughout their growth and development. The Social Black Belt incorporates grades K-12.
  • Accountability - We are responsible for our personal acquisitions.  Empowering our youth for a better future is what we are doing. We cannot indefinitely change environmental circumstances. Teachers, administrators, service providers, caregivers and parents do not have control over the choices children make when we are unavailable. The initial steps to self-empowerment must be identifying emotions, learning self-worth, and healing from painful experiences; only then can we teach accountability.

I am truly blessed to be a part of The Social Black Belt.

Program Success Examples
Social Black Belt is an evidenced based program.  A word from our center academy 8th grade teacher Brenda Crocker:
"I see them think before speaking out and hurting someone else they seem to becoming kinder and more thoughtful of each other. A kinder world is being created, one student, one class, one day, and one emotion at a time. What a great way to watch your class grow and take ownership of their emotions."
