Impact Statement
#1. The Sarasota Folk Club  stages a wonderful concert series each year. The concert program is held the last Monday of each month at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and is free to the public. We hold an open mic program in the first hour for those who would like to share their talent with our audiences. The second hour we showcase a professional folk act, both local and touring artists, all who have honed their craft and present a very professional musical concert. We ask for a small donation, from those who can afford it, to help pay the featured artist and cover our production expenses.
#2. We successfully held our 10th annual Folk and Acoustic Music Festival this past March at the Oscar Scherer State Park down in Osprey, Fl.
#3. We are delighted to have gained our 501(c)3 non-profit status with the Federal Government in 2012 and successfully used our new status to solicit funds in 2013 to help defray our festival production expenses. We secured a grant from the Sarasota Arts Alliance to help fund the advertising of our 2013 Festival.
#1. To continue our monthly concert series at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. Bringing top quality folk acts from across the United States to our audiences.
#2. We are currently in the production stages of our 11th annual Folk Festival and we are delighted that the Park Manager and the CSO (Park volunteer group) have invited us to return to Oscar Scherer State Park once again in 2014!
#3. We are moving forward with goals to expand our Folk Festival to include folk dance as well as educational workshops for children to give them hands on experience with the musical instruments and performance on the stage.
#4. And we are striving to secure more grant money to cover the expenses of our festival hoping to eventually secure enough funds to be able to offer our festival to the public with free admission.
Needs Statement
For the staging of our annual festival we are always in need of generous and responsible volunteers. Our production costs cover the pay for our showcase artists, the tent rentals and advertising expenses which totals an approximate expense of $18,000. Of course we are always looking to defray those expenses with financial donations and grants.
Background Statement
The Sarasota Folk Club was formed in the late 1980's by a group of folk music and dance enthusiasts. Initially a chapter of the statewide Friends of Florida Folk organization it was originally called "SaraFOFF". Its members began a concert series housed in several different venues around Sarasota which featured local and touring folk music artists. The club grew from a few members to several hundred in the first few years. In the mid 90's SaraFOFF made the decision to branch away from the Friends of Florida Folk organization and obtain its own not-for-profit status with the state of Florida.
Remaining a "sister" association with FOFF, this freed the now incorporated "Sarasota Folk Club, Inc" the ability to raise it's own money and start the process of producing it's own Folk Music Festival. By early 2000 the folk club's concert series had found a permanent home at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron where it continues to stage monthly concerts. And in 2002 the folk club produced it's first all day folk music festival on the Crowley Museum grounds out in Myakka. In 2007 the club moved the now very successful all day, annual folk music festival to the Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey, FL and expanded to a two day festival. Run exclusively by volunteers, the Sarasota Folk Club and it's Annual Folk Music Festival are gems in the crown of arts organizations here in Sarasota County.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
I have served several times now as the President of the Sarasota Folk Club. Each term has been a five year committment. For the past five years I have also served as the director of the Sarasota Folk Festival, a rewarding job but one that I am pleased to be passing on this year to Eileen Kozloff.
As a professional musician and entertainer myself I am passionate about the quality of production of any event that is striving to present itself to the public as a showcase of quality music. It has been my privilege to help this folk club grow from a "chapter" in the statewide Friends of Florida Folk organization in the mid 1990's, into it's own not-for-profit corporation in the state of Florida in the early 2000's, and now as a federally acknowledged 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2013. We continue to grow as a folk family that shares the love of folk and acoustic music. And I am privileged to serve and be served by the group of volunteers that make up this fine organization. From my board of directors, who are all passionate about their positions in the folk club, to the members at large who are consistently supportive with their enthusiastic participation at each event and their financial support of our endeavors I am grateful.
Mindy Simmons, President, Sarasota Folk Club

Short Term Success To gain funding for production expenses  including but not exclusively artists pay, tent rentals and advertising costs.
Long Term Success Every year after our festival has been completed and our volunteers have had a chance to catch up on sleep and rest a bit, we hold a debriefing  celebration/meeting/pot-luck gathering to evaluate how each area of the festival went. We take positive feed back and constructive criticism to continually build and grow the quality of the production of our festival and the efficiency of the execution of our festival. Our ultimate goal is to be able to offer the festival to the public for free.
Program Success Monitoring Our success is measured by a line item account of expenses balanced in the black at the end of each festival and the feedback from the artists and the patrons who attend the festival.
Program Success Examples
Each year we receive emails and letters of thanks and praise for the quality of our festival. From the professionalism of our performers to the stages and environment of the state park, the quality of our food vendors and the quality and variety of our craft vendors.
We also measure our success with the fact that our volunteer base continues to return each year to help stage yet another annual Folk Festival event!

Governance Comments by Organization We are always moving forward with creative ideas for fun and family friendly music programs. The Board of Directors is working to develop programs that attract a demographically diverse audience to the art of folk music. The rich history of folk music in our Country includes music from the cultures of the European countries whose people migrated to America as well as those from our South American neighbors and  the African people who now embrace America as their home. We want to share this rich, diverse music with as big an audience as we can. We feel that our Folk Music Festival is an event that accomplishes this goal. And so we continue with it's 11th annual production in 2014.

Financials Comments
Financial Comments by Organization By hosting a folk festival, sponsoring a monthly music series, posting music and dance events on our website and encouraging jams, we continue to meet our club goals. It's important to us to preserve, educate and share folk music and folk arts in the Sarasota area. We need financial support to help us with insurance, rent, tents, signs, advertising, flyers, performer payment and the many expenses incurred to continue our programs.
