Background Statement
Next year's event, May  10-12th , 2018, represents the 9th anniversary of the founding of the Harvey Milk Festival.  We have worked hard to increase the professionalism and impact of our event, by becoming a 501(c)(3) organization, forming our host committee, and moving the music festival from the Rosemary District to Five Points Park downtown. We were able to launch a new performance art program for HMF 2016, producing Live Art and Theatre artists at Florida Studio Theatre.

Areas Served Comments At the present time, the Harvey Milk Festival is primarily a three day event including Live Art, Theatre, and a music festival featuring emerging talent from across the country. In the Fall we have the Fabulous Independent Film Festival, which is a 3-day Film Festival with several events.  All of these events occur in downtown Sarasota, Florida but we have enjoyed visitors from around the state as well as other locations.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

Harvey Milk Festival has successfully held its 8th annual event in May 2017, consisting of three days on emerging artists in Live Art, Theatre and Music in honor of Harvey Milk.

The event is to help inspire others to use their voice and be a part of the movement.  The festival allows us to share Harvey Milk's legacy and celebrate his life work.

The concept of the festival began in May 2010 upon the announcement of Harvey Milk Day in California. With Florida being a place where a lot of Harvey Milk's generation has retired, many LGBTQ people wanted to share their stories with me. I even met his old Navy bunkmate who showed me the message Harvey Milk wrote him in his yearbook.

Sharing the same birthday as Harvey Milk, I witnessed an LGBTQ equality speech by Cleve Jones in DC at the 2009 Equality March that led me to become a gay rights activist. With first hand experience of the inequalities of our country I focused all of my passion to organize the first Harvey Milk Festival with less than a month to do so. Volunteers from our community provided me with assistance and we had an attendance of 1200 people. I knew the event was to become a tradition for the residents of Sarasota.

In order to grow the festival, I asked a few people to collaborate with me, forming the board of directors. Each year we have grown as an organization, obtaining a 501c(3) non-profit status in 2012. That year, the HMF board moved the festival to Five Points Park in historical downtown Sarasota. Due to the attendance growth, the festival continues to reach out to the community to keep the festivities free. Harvey Milk Festival is completely driven by volunteers, sponsors and concession sales. All profits fund the event the following year.

HMF is seeking a fundraising chair.

With receiving a $5000 grant for marketing from SVC, the festival is making waves, continuing to evolve to expand its programs.

Thank you,

Shannon Fortner

Short Term Success

The HMF Film program enriches HMF by fostering emerging talent beyond music and art. We are thrilled to adopt the Fabulous Independent Festival and work with Magida Diouri, former Fabulous Independent Film Festival Director, to produce this event.

Long Term Success

The HMF film program was added to the festival to support LGBT themes in the cinema. The hope is that adding a film component will capture a wider audience and foster new talent in LGBT filmmaking. We hope to grow exponentially and build our audience in concert with this new program.

Program Success Monitoring The success of this program is monitored in ticket sales and sponsorships.
Program Success Examples

The HMF Film program’s success is monitored by ticket sales and general comments by attendees.

Long Term Success

Future success will include increasing the number and quality of submissions, as well as the geographical area of the artists. An increase in these areas will provide enhanced exposure for the Festival and the artists as well as increasing the revenue from program.

Program Success Monitoring

The Board of Directors closely tracks the number of guests, the number of submissions, and the financial results of each program. Our focus for future events will be to increase the diversity of submissions from beyond the local area to national, higher profile artists.

Program Success Examples

Success in the Program will include increased art submissions, and increased attendance, along with a higher value of exhibits and greater revenue generated to support the Festival. As we noted previously, participation by accalimed professional artists would demonstrate increased success of the program.

Description The Harvey Milk Festival Music Program is the core focus of the organization.  The music program seeks to foster emerging talent among musicians who support LGBTQ equality and reject discrimination.
Budget $33,000
Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music
Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Yes
Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Adults Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgendered
Short Term Success
Increasing the short term success of the Harvey Milk Festival music program would include continuing to increase attendance from the Sarasota area and beyond, stimulating tourism.  One of our goals for the 2014 Festival is to coordinate high definition live streaming webcast for audio and video.
Long Term Success
The long term success of the Harvey Milk Festival music program would include adding more performers (from the current range of ten to twelve); increasing the budget for headlining performers (from the current range of $5,000 to $6,000); increasing the multi-media aspect of the event, and possibly expanding the performances to additional day(s), either consecutively or non-consecutively.
Program Success Monitoring The Board of Directors monitors event results through communications and feedback from volunteers, sponsors, vendors, donors, attendees, city officials, and event neighbors.  Financial results are easily monitored by comparing year over year revenue by category, including vendor booth sales; food and drink concessions; and merchandise.
Program Success Examples

Overall attendance has increased significantly from inception in 2010 with an estimated attendance of 1,200 to an estimated attendance of 5,000 in 2013.  Beverage concessions increased by approximately 15% and vendor booth sales increased by 60% on a year over year basis.  In regard to booking performers, there was much greater interest in playing the Harvey Milk Festival in 2013 than in past years.  Several performers contacted the Festival this year and expressed interest, a notable shift toward unsolicited requests that demonstrates the Festival's growing visibility among booking agents and musicians on a national scale.

Description The purpose HMF Youth Outreach Program is to educate students in Sarasota County between the ages of 13 and 18 of Harvey Milk’s legacy and the impact civil rights leaders such as Milk have made within our LGBTQ community.
