Impact Statement

Currently, Young Life in Sarasota is experiencing a tremendous amount of growth. In relation to the 2011/12 school year, we are currently reaching three times as many kids with our Club and Camp ministries, and we hope to double our current impact over by the end of the 2013/14 school year.

Needs Statement
1. Our Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2013/143 is $125,028. Our goal, however, is to raise approximately $160,000, which will enable us to:
  • Hire a Staff Associate for the 2015/16 Fiscal Year. Staff Associate is a full-time position with a 3-year commitment and focuses on both the education (Seminary) and training of the Staff Associate. Total cost for a Staff Associate is approximately $50,000 annually, which accounts for salary and benefits and all training costs. A Staff Associate will be directly involved in ministry with kids and will aid in recruiting and training volunteer leaders.
  • Expand our "Program" line item, which is how we designate money that goes directly to ministry with kids and volunteer leaders. Because we are actively pursuing a 500% ministry growth over the coming six years, we would like to grow our Program Budget accordingly.
2. We would like to raise $15,000 to go directly to our Campership Account. All donations to this account go to lower the cost of weekend or Summer Camp for all kids, including the creation and distribution of Camp Scholarships for kids who cannot afford to go to Camp. This will allow our Camp ministry to grow by over 50% in our current Fiscal Year (ending in September 2014.)
Background Statement
Young Life was incorporated in 1941 by Jim Rayburn, a seminary student and part-time youth minister in Gainesville, Texas. He wanted to reach out to kids who were disinterested in church. Rayburn took the challenge to go where the kids were, meet them on their turf and find a creative way to share the love of God with them. Rayburn's method of reaching out to adolescents worked in 1941, and it continues to be effective today.

Young Life began in Sarasota in 1991, and still believes in going where kids are and earning their friendship and ultimately earning the right to share the grace and truth of Jesus with them. In June of 2012, Young Life in Sarasota welcomed a new Area Director who brings 18 years of experience in Young Life ministry and a passion for expanding the reach of the mission in Sarasota County.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
In Young Life, we realize every "number" represents a kid who desperately needs to know the truth about God's love in a way he or she can comprehend, with the freedom to respond as he or she chooses. Numbers are important then, because they represent more kids encountering the Savior. That's why we'll continue to reach out to kids across Sarasota County and won't stop until kids at every middle school and high school have a chance to find out about and follow Jesus.

- Jodi Evans, Young Life Sarasota Board Chair
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
The world of kids is fast-paced and constantly changing, full of excitement, adventure and limitless potential. But it can also be a world full of confusion, loneliness and fear. For many kids, it is a world of relentless pressure, overwhelming anxiety and incredible darkness. It's into this darkness that Young Life leaders venture, hoping to earn their friendship and longing to point them toward the Light of Life- Jesus Christ.

Young Life leaders spend countless hours showing up in the lives of kids, taking time to learn what is important to them, because we care about their joys and triumphs, their heartaches and setbacks.

We sincerely believe that kids' lives are greatly impacted whenever caring adults come alongside them, sharing with them unconditional friendship and God's great love.
Programs
Description
Young Life's efforts to reach out to every kid, everywhere have resulted in a number of specific ministries. Each of these apply the basics of Young Life to meet kids just as they are through friendship and faith. Young Life is the ministry to high school students, while Wyld Life is the name of our ministry for middle school students. Our plan in the coming six years is to develop two specialized ministries: Capernaum, our ministry to kids with special needs and/or various disabilities, and YoungLives, our ministry to teenage moms.

Young Life provides healthy, creative fun. From weekly clubs to seasonal camping experiences to daily outings with leaders, to in depth Bible Study, Young Life is known around the world as an organization that knows how to share Jesus in a fun and relevant way.

"(After struggling) with a cutting addiction for 6 years, I always dreamed about a place where there was no violence or hate, and I found that place at Young Life. For the first time in a long time, I have a real smile on my face. Thanks!"

Program Comments by Organization
Among our greatest challenges in Young Life Sarasota is the need for more volunteer leaders who have the desire and the availability to make a long-term investment into the lives of middle school and high school students.

The long-term plan includes engaging and involving local churches to recruit and train enough volunteers to reach exponentially more kids in Sarasota County. We are moving forward with local colleges to develop a leadership recruiting and training program on their respective campuses as well.
