Impact Statement

The American Cancer Society estimates more than 600,000 Americans died of cancer this past year. the unfortunate reality we face is, despite the advances in cancer research, thousands of Moms and Dads in their 20's, 30's and 40's will die from late stage cancer each year, leaving behind grieving children.

Featured as the cover story on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, twice featured on The Today Show;  NBC's Sunday Night Football and twice by Sanjay Gupta; JAJF, a national 5019(c)(3) , treats children facing the imminent loss of their young Mom or Dad to cancer to WOW! Experiences... a timeout together as a family away from their late stage cancer to fabulous destinations to create positive, cherished, lasting ( indispensable) memories, while they can.  Oncologists prescribe JAJF as part of the treatment protocol for the patient, the spouse and their children... the family together which is extraordinary. Oncologists have validated the medicinal impact JAJF is having in the immediate term and now longer term for these families especially the children who are losing their heores and security blankets at such a vulnerable time.  Oncologists believe in the power of beaches, sunsets, sports, music and roller coasters and FUN as a family.  JAJF has provided WOW! Experiences to thousands of children and their Moms and Dads across our community and across the United States since 2006.
Their supporters appreciate: Cancer does not just strike the Mom or Dad; it strikes their children as well  These children are at risk also. These children ad families together deserve a timeout to experience - to feel- to capture positive, fun time together and lasting memories...while they can.   Their supporters agree: The best part of memories is making them and memories become our greatest inheritance. JAJF is supported by individual finanical donors who make WOW! Experiences possible.

JAJF is clearly continuing to make a lasting difference in the lives of these children who are losing their young Moms and Dads at such a vulnerable time.
Needs Statement
Sadly, it remains too easy to receive prescriptions to treat these sweet, young families. Despite advances in cancer research, too many young  Moms and Dads are not being saved by the next wonder drug, clinical trial or hope for a cure and are leaving behind theri children.   As the only organization of its kind, JAJF needs to be sustained. There is a need to keep fighting the fight; their is also a need to keep fighting for life...for family time.
For Oncologists to prescribe JAJF as part of the treatment protocol for the patient, the spouse and their children,... the family together is extraordianry.  Oncologists have validated the medicinal impact JAJF is having in the immediate term and now longer term for these families especially the children who are lsoing their heroes and security blankets at such a vulnerable time.
JAJF's top 5 most pressing needs are funding for:
1- investments/capacity-building support $250,000
2- direct WOW! Experience program funding $100,000
3- staff expansion $80,000

Background Statement
Founded by Tampa native and  Sarasota resident, Jon Albert, the Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation (JAJF) is a national resource here in our community providing cherished (positive) time for children who are facing the imminent loss of their Mom or Dad to cancer.  JAJF was inspired by Jill and Jon Albert’s real life story. With an M.B.A. and years of experience in the corporate world, Jon found himself, his wife, Jill, and their two young children, facing Jill’s Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. They realized early on in Jill’s fight the disease was not just attacking her body, but it was affecting their entire family. Jon took his marketing and operations background and combined it with their drive to formulate something positive and meaningful out of the unfair and cruel. The Alberts knew that for their kids, strong memories of special times together would be their greatest inheritance. From this notion and inspiration, the Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation was born.

Incorporated as a national 501(c)(3) in June 2006, the Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation began serving its first family in October of 2006 and has now treated more than 1,100 families to WOW! Experiences across the country.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
We refer to our Board of Directors as Ambassadors.  Because we are a single mission organization, there are not a lot of strategic or governance complexities.  Our Board is exceptionally passionate about JAJF. Our national Board is comprised of Executives and Oncologists who have very full plates, but their commitment and compassion for JAJF is unwavering.  Our Board understands the measurable impact we are having and how JAJF is addressing an overlooked population. JAJF’s business model is lean and very efficient and therefore straightforward (and rewarding) to govern.
My passion for JAJF goes back to my own childhood when I lost my mother to cancer as a 10 year old child.  I recall the difficult times that my own family went through as my dying mother and young father tried to keep our family as a single cohesive family unit all while dealing with the misery and losing battle to this dreaded disease. As a business leader and a family man, now is the time to give back and help other families, good families dealing with unfathomable situations with so many kids losing their Moms or Dads.  I did not have that opportunity to have a WOW memory with my Mom or my family and my father could not remotely afford that kind of experience with four kids, so I know how special this gift that JAJF provides actually is.
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

Thank you for your interest in the Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation. We have the privilege of hearing from each of our late stage families and of receiving their gratitude and joy for being given the chance to spend quality, fun time together while they can. The best way we can share the profound and poignant impact/"results" we are having on thousands of children and their Dads and Moms across the nation is to have you stop by the Appreciation Archives and Family Photo Gallery on our website and listen to one or two of the many voice messages families have left. Or, peruse the pictures, hand written notes or emails from these families enjoying the time they have left together creating lasting memories. It is their smiles, their voices, their happiness together... before the inevitable. It is their reality.

These are sweet, sweet messages from families. They become bittersweet when you realize many of the Moms and Dads have passed away only months after you hear their voices filled with joy and you see their smiles and relief. JAJF makes it seamless for each family... from drive way to drive way... everything is covered.  The family need not worry, lift a finger nor spend a dime.
Imagine how these families (our families) cherish these pictures, portraits and the indispensable memories they gained on their WOW! Experience. This is the joy, the smiles, the normalcy we give to our families. This is the happiness and positive timeout from late stage cancer each family deserves. This is what our national partners and donors are providing.

Smile as you peruse our website.  We are on the joy, laughter, smile, positive side of late stage cancer.  We treat the families; not the cancer.  Smile as your contribution helps so many children and their Moms and Dads.

Jon Albert

JAJF serves families who have a Mom or Dad with late stage, limited life expectancy cancer and at least one child between the ages of 3-18. JAJF helps children spend important quality time with their parents in the face of difficult times and uncertainties and provides an encouraging, healing experience they will forever treasure.
We are also very proud of the measurable impact we are having on young, late stage military families across the United States:  Too many military men and women...too many veterans of one battleground come back to face another war.  Too many of these heroes who have served our country (or their spouses) are losing the fight against cancer leaving behind their children.  JAJF is also providing cherished, lasting (indispensable) memories for these children WITH their Dads and Moms...together as a family...while they can.  We've added another layer to: the best part of memories is making them and memories become our greatest inheritance.
A WOW! Experience is a unique, memorable four-day getaway that allows the family to enjoy time with each other away from their new normal of living with the dire circumstances of late stage cancer. WOW! Experiences offer parents a timeout from the inevitable outlook of leaving behind their children and give the children a chance to have fun and enjoy positive, uplifting time with their family.

Each WOW! Experience is 100% free of cost for all families we treat. We take families from driveway to driveway. There are many direct and indirect costs associated with WOWs and arranging all aspects of the experiences, which go above what our in-kind support covers. WOWs are created by matching in-kind donations with cash funding we receive to complete the WOW package. This allows JAJF to create exciting getaways for families, while maximizing and increasing the value of the cash donations we receive. Typical WOW expenses include Transportation, Food & Beverage (never alcohol), Tips, Travel Fees, WOW Activities, Rental Fees, Fuel, Photography,Parking, Insurance, and any other various costs.

WOW! Experiences are customized based on the family’s interests and our available inventory – no two WOWs are the same. Past WOW! Experiences have included: VIP status at venues and accommodations; special access to people and events; privileged guest appearances and tours; event tickets; meet and greets; beach resort stays; concerts; The GRAMMY Awards; The Oscars; American Idol LIVE events; The Emmys; The X-Games; professional and college sports, cruises; theme parks and attractions; and even private tours of the White House.

Program Success Monitoring

JAJF uses a comprehensive evaluation process with both quantitative and qualitative components. The are used to assess our program’s efficiency and impact to successfully grow and improve for future families. JAJF’s quantitative evaluations were created for two data collections, the number of families that have been served and the program evaluations.

The first measure is determined by the number familyWOW!Experiences created in one year. The second measure is captured through two separate evaluations that were created with a clinical psychologist, one for the families and one to each of our coalition partners. Every family we “treat” receives an evaluation after their WOW. This provides JAJF with an opportunity to update contact information so the family can be added to the alumni network and to critically evaluate the family’s experience. The Coalition evaluation is sent once annually to all of our coalition partners who refer their patients to JAJF. This allows the physicians who treat their patients to have an opportunity to analyze and observe the psychosocial impact the WOW had on the patient and family.

JAJF’s qualitative evaluations are demonstrated through the Appreciation Archives on the website. This is a collection of thank you notes and voice mails from the families JAJF has "treated". This is part of our impact and results. The Appreciation Archives are uploaded onour  website for stakeholders, supporters, volunteers, and alumni to view online. In addition to the families’appreciation and gratitude, we have received tremendous national praise fromThe Lance Armstrong Foundation, Komen for The Cure, National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship, and The National Cancer Institute. Both the families we have treated and our medical advisors have applauded the positive impact of these WOW! Experiences have on the grieving process, which directly focuses on our core mission.

Program Success Examples

Our client evaluations indicated 98% rated their experience as “Excellent” (highest possible rating), confirming the WOW provides families with an important break to lift their spirits and give them time to create lasting memories as a family. Our clients noted the process for participating was simple and took the stress away from their daily lives during their vacation from cancer. Their WOW not only gave them something to look forward to before the trip, it invigorated them and gave their entire family a new zest for living in the moment and cherishing the time they have left together.

In addition, 100% of our Oncologists rated their patients experience as “Excellent”. The Oncologists confirmed the impact the WOW had on relieving stress and providing the family with an important, yet not recognized need for a break for the patient, the caregiver, and children. All shared this was an invaluable resource for their practice, adding value to their holistic/total patient care.

Program Comments by Organization
To put the WOW! Society #'s (and increments) into further perspective, for every $1 raised, JAJF provides approx. $7 in value to each family.  It costs JAJF approx. $1,500 per prescribed timeout (WOW! Experience) while the audited value of each WOW! over the first ten years averages $10,500).  JAJF does not allow the family to worry about any details  from start to finish from driveway to driveway.  Imagine taking your family to San Diego, NYC, AZ, CO, Hawaii , San Francisco, Nashville, Seattle, a dude ranch in Wyoming, Amelia Island ... every expense covered for about $1,500.  These young late stage families could never afford to get away (JAJF receives their income status.)  And, they would never go unless their Oncologist gave permission via the presciription.
