Impact Statement

Since 2006, we present world-class classical guitarists to Sarasota audiences. Every year the number of listeners has increased. It was essential for us to make these concerts accessible to the community by not only to find a location that was acoustically correct, and centrally located, but we also wanted to make the concerts affordable.

Over the years we presented many concerts with outstanding artists from around the globe who are also some of the most distinguished teachers of the classical guitar. Part of our mission is to educate, so GuitarSarasota sponsors local and regional guitar students to take master classes with performers and instructors from the Manhattan School of Music in New York, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Chicago College for the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, the Hochschule für Musik Weimar in Germany, and several other institutions.

Many classical guitar students from schools like Booker High School in Sarasota, Southeast High School in Bradenton, State College of Florida, Hillsborough Community College, Stetson University, Florida Gulf Coast University and Miami University were able to attend those master classes – again, free of charge thanks to sponsorships by GuitarSarasota.

GuitarSarasota also sponsors six Mini-Recital & Lecture Series concerts at Art Center Sarasota. Local and regional musicians perform a 45-minute concert, followed by an artist lecture and/or question and answer session. This series is free and open to the public and is aimed at increasing awareness, community-wide, of the beauty of guitar music.

Needs Statement

GuitarSarasota's continued growth and success over the last eight years demanded a move to a slightly larger venue. This requires more marketing, advertising, and public relations efforts, so we are looking to increase our budget by $3000.

GuitarSarasota's Mini-Concert & Lecture Series, held six times a year at Art Center Sarasota includes a small reception following the event for which we are seeking a sponsor. Sponsorship of this series for one season is $4000-$5000.

GuitarSarasota has plans to launch a community guitar-teaching program, offering small group lessons, partly sponsored by GuitarSarasota, and partly paid for by the student. The idea is to make classical guitar lessons accessible to students of all ages and income levels - the only criteria is the desire and commitment to learn. GuitarSarasota is seeking a sponsorship of $5000-$10,000 per year.
Background Statement
GuitarSarasota has been in existence since January 2006. Its inaugural concert was February 18, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sarasota, Florida. With one month to organize and promote, the first concert was attended by about 80 people. After our initial "test" season, we had very positive results and GuitarSarasota grew steadily and strongly.

Our 2012 and 2013 Seasons were "sold out" seasons, and we even had two concerts that were pre-concert "sold out". A nice problem to have, but one we had to address. This 2015 season, GuitarSarasota is moving to a slightly larger location, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota, to meet the demands of our patrons, however, we insist on maintaining the idea that the classical guitar, especially the solo classical guitar, needs to be enjoyed in an intimate setting. Our new location seats 250 patrons (our old venue allowed a max of 200).

We have and will continue to provide master class settings to students of the classical guitar in our community.

GuitarSarasota is a focused non-profit organization and our members and subscribers are very loyal and attentive. Part of our mission is to make sure we give back to the community and educate through concerts, lectures and masterclasses.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
As a member of the Sarasota arts community for almost twenty years, it has been a once in a life time experience to initiate and oversee the birth and growing up of GuitarSarasota. As a performer and educator of the classical guitar myself, it was my wish to establish our instrument on the same level as any other instrument. The "art of guitar" playing in Sarasota needed a venue, organization and support. By creating GuitarSarasota, we established a nationally and internationally renown organization that is recognized by its peers in Florida and worldwide by the Musical America Worldwide Directory.
