Impact Statement
Accomplishment 1: Last year: distribution of over $160,000 of $10 food gift cards. All funding comes from public donations.
Accomplishment 2: Over fifty-four tons of food from annual Thanksgiving food drive, hundreds fed at community public dinners; benefiting over 50,000 local hungry. All this is accomplished entirely by volunteers.
Accomplishment 3: Celebrated our 30th Anniversary with a public ceremony attended by current and former mayors, elected officials, community leaders and the general public. Guest speakers, food and use of the facility were all donated. Canned food was collected and proceeds from a silent auction were donated to local food pantries.
Goals for current year
1. Increase donations to enable the ability to feed more needy hungry. We have requests for $200,000 in $10 food gift cards.
2. Increase participation of schools, companies and organizations to collect food for annual food drive. This year our goal is 60 tons of non perishable food items.
3. Give away 3,000 turkeys for Thanksgiving to needy families in the local area
4. Continue to maintain overhead expenses to less than 10% via all volunteer committee.
5. Add more non-profit organizations with food pantries in the Venice and North Port.
Needs Statement
1. For our food gift card program we need an additional $50,000 to reach our goal of giving away $ $205,000 in $10 food gift cards.

Background Statement
Since 1987 over 405,000 hungry persons have been helped by this program. Manatee and Sarasota government leaders are asking for your financial support to provide food gift cards to those who are in need during the holiday season.  All money collected stays in our communities and is distributed by our member agencies as food gift cards allowing recipients, most of them children and elderly,  both dignity and choice. The number of gift card requests always exceeds the money donated.  Increased giving allows better serving the people in need in our communities.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
Over 30 years ago, I saw a need to bring together various facets of the community in a joint effort to feed the hungry with simplicity, eliminating red tape and attempting to meet this community need during the holiday season.   With the support of Sarasota Mayor, Fredd Atkins, a letter was sent out to local churches and benevolent organizations in the community to come together and discuss ways to help meet the urgent community need.  Out of this evolved the Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program in 1987. I became the volunteer chairman in 1991 and have served in that capacity ever since. Over the years the program expanded to include the endorsement and support of mayors and commission chairs from cities throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties. This has been one of my passions to help feed the hungry. Since 1987 over 400,000 hungry persons have been helped by this program through the generosity of the wonderful people of our communities and this all volunteer committee.
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
One of the main things that makes this program different is the low overhead or low organizational costs, less than 10% expended via marketing, printing, mailing and postage expenses necessary to raise funds to help feed the hungry. The participating member of program are all volunteers, with no government support. As executive director, I am the only paid employee. Most services are donated with the exception of printing, mailing our annual letter, minimal advertising and other promotional items. Approximately 95%  of donations received go to feed the hungry in our communities. Our focus is on the holiday season. Our annual food drive collects and distributes over 50 tons of food, free of charge, to member agencies via all volunteer participants just before the Thanksgiving holiday. The more the public can give the more we are able to help feed for the holidays.

Description

Annual letter of solicitation signed by government leaders, community mayors and commission chairs, asking for financial support to provide food gift cards to those who are in need during this holiday season.  In an attempt to reach more donors and reduce mailing costs, we reduced the number of direct mailings and redirected those funds for promotion on the radio.

Short Term Success

Obvious near term achievement results in receiving food gift card(s) to help feed their family for one or more holiday meals.  Statistics reveal 35% are children, 15% are elderly, 16% are handicapped,  and remaining are others in need; and, they are very grateful for the immediate outcome of food to eat.

Long Term Success

Recipients are screened and pre-registered by individual member agencies prior to receiving food gift cards. Food gift cards are restricted for food only and allow a measure of dignity and choice to feed the individual and possibly their family during the holidays.  Tracking is immediate as recipients are very grateful to have food to eat for their next meal.  The constant demand is much greater than the supply of available food gift cards or dried and canned food.  Public data notes that three out of five children are "at risk" of being hungry (means missing one or more meals per day).  Problem is extensive and can be measured on a daily basis via participating member agencies that have programs that feed one day per week. Ultimate change is that more people find out where food or gift cards are being distributed and overwhelm the distributing agencies.

You know how the program is working from the grateful words of appreciation and tears in the eyes of the recipients.  We receive constant messages of gratitude from workers to measure success.

Program Success Examples

Member agencies requests for food gift cards exceeds the amount available serves to convince the committee that the program continues to do well.  One example is giving a mother , living in her car with several children, a few gift cards.  Upon receipt of the cards she bursts into tears of gratitude because she can feed her children food.  There is much more demand, for food gift cards and canned food, than supply. 

Description Live radio broadcasts invite listeners to help feed the hungry for Thanksgiving.  Listeners come to the broadcast location, purchase a turkey and donate it to The Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program. The turkeys are given away free at our local food pantries throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties. In order to receive a turkey, people have to register at our food pantries and show a legitimate need.

Description Three weeks prior to Thanksgiving, schools, organizations, businesses, government offices and hundreds of people are invited to collect non perishable food items to be given away free. Over 5,000 volunteers participate in this effort.  Local businesses donate boxes, signs, tape, and transportation for pick up and delivery of the food items.  Hundreds of volunteers come together on the final collection day to sort and distribute the food to volunteer member agencies.

Short Term Success Each member agency receives about 45 boxes full of nonperishable food items to be given away free to local needy and hungry individuals and families to augment their holiday meals.

Description

Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to provide services to homeless veterans.  The local venue for this annual event is held at the Palmetto Fair Grounds in November where a variety of services are offered from different local agencies and organizations. including:

Food;  Clothing;  Medical Screening; Hair Cuts; Job Placement; Assistance Dental Services; Bicycle Give Away; Music and Entertainment; Hot Cooked Meals; Flu Shots; Amnesty Court; and Community Services.  The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program provided: Volunteers and Breakfast for this event feeding about 600.

Program Success Examples One lady approached an official at the Stand Down with several children in tow requesting assistance. After a brief interview with her the official offered a few food gift cards, upon which the lady broke down and cried. She has been living in her car with her children and had no food or place to stay.  She was extremely touched that someone cared and provided assistance.

Program Comments by Organization All volunteer food drive:
Schools, companies, religious groups, agencies and organizations are invited to collect food for our annual Thanksgiving food drive. This is a massive effort to coordinate requiring countless volunteer hours to: sign up participants via phone calling, e-mail and faxes; distribute collection boxes and fliers throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties; get vehicles to pick up food that is collected; and finally to sort and distribute the food.
Community Awareness:
To promote food drives, community feedings, homeless stand downs, and miscellaneous fund raising activities we solicit donations from printing companies, office supply stores, duplication services, public service announcements, articles for news media, etc.  This requires many man hours of outreach and maintaining rapport with local providers asking them to graciously donate their services.

I have been working as a volunteer for the Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program for the past 16 years.  I have been the food drive coordinator for 15 years - growing from 12 participating collection locations to over 295 today. I became the Vice Chairman eight years ago and was appointed as the Executive Director at the end of 2016
I have a B.S. from Auburn University, was an officer in the US Navy and my professional career has been as a computer teacher/consultant. I am paraplegic and also serve on the board of directors of the Suncoast Center of Independent Living.

Each year the Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program requests the endorsement and support of our program via individual signatures of the Mayors and Commission Chairs of participating cities and counties in Sarasota and Manatee counties.  Every year newly elected officials are informed about the program and solicited for their support.

The Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program helps organize and provide volunteers to run the Giving Hunger the Blues event. We work directly with the Giving Hunger the Blues staff for this annual event.

Management Comments by Organization The constant challenge is to encourage the public to respond to our letter of appeal for support. The reason being, the more the public responds, the more hungry people we are able to feed.  The volunteers that participate in our program are passionate about feeding the hungry. It is a challenge to get the public involved with the same passion.  The goal is to administer this program with minimal red tape to the recipient agencies so they can feed as many as they can.

     Typically the requests for food gift cards during the holiday seasons far exceeds our fundraising efforts by at least $50,000.  Our mission statement is to fulfill the needs of the hungry in Sarasota and Manatee counties. We need to increase our fundraising to accomplish this goal. As you may well know our members are all volunteers from participating organizations which can currently claim a 90% efficiency factor in stewardship of the donors contributions.  That is to say, only 10% of our fundraising is spent on operating expenses. Our only asset is cash from donations.
      Alternatively any assistance in subsidizing our marketing, printing and postage budget will also make available additional funds to fulfill our mission statement.  Our budget in these areas is currently $25,000.
