Impact Statement

Accomplishments in 2014:

Season of Sculpture presented Season VII, Shared Ground: Eight Artists, Eighteen Installations, Sarasota’s biennial outdoor bay front exhibition featuring works by eight highly acclaimed artists of international, national and regional renown.  This International Invitational Exhibition of sculptures is free and open to the public 24/7 exhibited throughout Sarasota’s stunning Bayfront Park from November 16, 2013 to May 2014.

Season VII is the seventh exhibition of monumental sculptural works that is truly unique to Sarasota and enjoys an international reputation for excellence.  It has an important impact in our community, as an average of 35,000 automobiles drive by and several hundred people walk/bike/ or run by the exhibit space each day

Season of Sculpture also produced a satellite exhibition, Shared Ground: Small Works Exhibition, at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Building on Main Street featuring small-scale works by artists represented in the outdoor sculpture exhibition in the Bayfront Park from January 7-May 30, 2014.  This Small Works Exhibition adds an exciting dimension to the understanding of the works of Bayfront exhibited artists.

Educational programs and visitor engagement represent and important component of Season VII and include the following activities:

We collaborate with area schools to conduct docent-led tours of the exhibition for over 600 K-12 students. Adult docent-led tours are available by reservation for groups, individuals, organizations and education-specific programs.

The Community Dialogue Series:  Exploring the Possibilities of Public Art is the first of an ongoing series inviting the public to join in lively conversations exploring relevant topics focused on art in the “public realm” and aesthetic issues specific to the Sarasota community.

Background Statement

Sarasota Season of Sculpture is the preeminent cultural leader in the Southeast that presents free, public exhibitions of monumental sculpture. It was founded in 1999 by Jill Kaplan and artist, Bruce White, for the express purpose of biennially exhibiting monumental sculpture on Sarasota's downtown bay front. Since 1999, we have exhibited 150 sculptures by 103 artists representing 13 countries and the United States.  By virtue of their location in a spectacular natural setting, Season of Sculpture exhibitions offer a singular way to encounter art.

In April of 2013 Season of Sculpture featured a solo exhibition of globally acclaimed African American female artist, Chakaia Booker, working with recycled materials. The exhibit featured an open to the public lecture in collaboration with Ringling College of Art and Design.

As the organization grew, we added educational programs, including docent guided tours, education for school age children with a focus on disadvantaged, an annual Symposium with speakers and panel discussions featuring museum directors, noted artists, collectors, architects and cultural leaders.

Collaborative activities have included presenting programs with the Ringling College of Art and Design as well as The John

and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

Exhibited sculptures are for sale with a resultant commission to the organization.  To date, Season of Sculpture has been responsible for gifting over a million dollars of monumental sculpture to the City of Sarasota.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

We are very appreciative of your support of Season of Sculpture.  Our achievements include the seven successfully delivered Seasons of monumental sculpture, the symposiums presented, educational outreach for students and the initiation of current and new projects i.e.; the publication of a book documenting exhibition of over 110 pieces of sculpture representing 86 artists from 15 states and 8 different countries. Our continued investment in the arts and cultural sector in Sarasota through presentation of singular exhibitions of monumental sculpture drives tourism and supports the quality of life in our community. It is for these reasons that we invite you to consider an investment in fostering the work of Season of Sculpture.

Our challenges are:

                           1.  Financial support for exhibitions

                           2.  Financial support for operations

                           3.  Branding and name recognition

                           4.  Acquiring office space and equipment

These challenges are being met with continued grant applications, fundraising activities and development of our strategic plan. The board has agreed on the revised mission, vision and goals.  We are now putting together our operating plan for year 2014 with the goal of becoming an annual exhibition.

SoS is currently an entirely volunteer run organization.   Our board of directors is passionately supportive of the arts and of sculpture in particular.  It is through the passion of our board members that the Sarasota Public Art Fund has been organized through which over a million dollars has been raised.   This money was used to purchase Unconditional Surrender by Seward Johnson and Complexus by John Henry, and subsequently gifted to the City of Sarasota.

As an organization we are extremely proud of our ability to contribute to the artistic core of the city of Sarasota in such a significant way.  Our path forward is represented in the needs section.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

In 2014, Season of Sculpture submitted a grant application to Bloomberg Philanthropies with the City of Sarastota and the architectural design firm of Diller, Scofilio + Renfro (New York) for a $1million public challenge grant. This grant would fund a temporary public art project in the City of Sarasota for the proposed exhibition, Bridging the Cityscape and Seascape through Art.  This was an outstanding opportunity for our City and the region.  No only would this project provide a spotlight on Sarasota as an arts and cultural destination, but also provide the City and its residents with an exciting art installation and activity along the Bayfront.  While Sarasota was not selected for this honor, we worked closely with the City to submit a compelling application.

Susan McLeod, Chair of the Season of Sculpture Board of Directors, was elected to the Board of the International Sculpture Center in New York in December.  This appointment will continue to raise awareness of the significance of Season of Sculpture as a nationally recognized exhibition of monumental sculpture in the United States.

Season of Sculpture adopted new Bylaws, changed its name to Sarasota Sculpture Center to better reflect its ongoing role in producing exhibitions and educational events throughout the year. Policies including conflict of interest and record keeping are in place. We have strengthened our Board of Directors with more members of the community with diverse backgrounds to join in our mission.  Strategic planning is ongoing with ourtreach to public relations organization for brand definition and projection. After our planning is concluded, we will be redefining our board member criteria and adding additional board members.
