Impact Statement

As one of Florida’s most admired senior communities, the Water’s Edge of Bradenton has stood for quality housing and care for nearly a decade.  A merger with National Church Residences in 2014 means that Water’s Edge of Bradenton is now owned and operated by the nation's largest not-for-profit developer and manager of housing for seniors.  Since 1961, National Church Residences has been an industry leader in senior services, retirement community management and support for people in need.  The Water’s Edge of Bradenton’s focus on quality housing and wellness fits perfectly with our efforts to integrate health care with housing to help seniors remain healthy and happy at home.

Our goals for the current year include:
To provide expanded assisted living and memory care service through the recently opened 80 unit senior living building.

Provide residents with more robust programming by focusing on health and wellness, new therapies, professional education, and technology.

Continue to strengthen relationships within the community to support programs, services and fundraising efforts.

Increase volunteerism at the Water’s Edge of Bradenton by not only engaging resident volunteers, but also volunteers from the surrounding community.

Background Statement

Developed in 2008, Water’s Edge of Bradenton became part of the National Church Residences’ portfolio in 2014. National Church Residences is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization that was founded in 1961 by Reverend John R. Glenn and four Presbyterian churches and has become the nation's largest not-for-profit developer and manager of affordable housing for seniors and other vulnerable populations. Individuals of all faiths, race, and national origins are served. With over 27,000 housing units and 340+ properties in 27 states and Puerto Rico, National Church Residences provides housing for seniors and modest-income families, supportive housing for the formerly homeless, hospice services, home health care, independent and assisted living, and skilled nursing communities. A holistic approach is used with services across the health care spectrum, resulting in the best possible care for each individual. The goal is to offer better care at lower costs, particularly in these times when the nation needs fresh approaches to care for the aging, homeless and the disabled.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
The organization’s commitment to the health, housing, and social needs of its residents is the hallmark that has firmly rooted it at the forefront of the senior housing and healthcare arena. The focus on resident health and well-being is engrained throughout the organization, and serves as the foundation for its mission. The organization's core values of mission, compassion, professionalism, and leadership are the guiding principles that permeate its every aspect. Our success stems largely from staunch resident advocacy and thoughtful concern for the issues facing today's seniors.
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
National Church Residences/Water’s Edge of Bradenton is an innovator that believes quality housing coupled with health care services is the solution needed for the difficult issues currently involving a rapidly aging population. As the nation’s largest provider of service coordination and quality housing for seniors, we are proactively working with residents to assess their well-being and to get them the services they need that will allow them to age in their homes. By offering independent living, assisted living and memory care, the Water’s Edge of Bradenton allows residents to age within the same community, where they call home. We also implement numerous programs that help our residents remain active and social, thereby preventing isolation and depression. Delaying or preventing nursing home care, hospitalizations and emergency room visits results in significant savings to already overburdened health care system and improves the quality of life for the individual. As a faith-based, not for profit organization, we believe that we have an obligation to find a way to deal with the coming senior housing and health care challenges. We want to be a part of the solution and advance better living for all seniors.
Description The Water's Edge of Bradenton  currently offers a creative writing class to its residents.  Lead by a former high school English teacher, the class encourages and fosters creativity, introduces participants to different writing styles and allows residents to interact with each other to prevent isolation and loneliness.

Short Term Success The short term success of the program is strictly qualitative.  Feedback from the instructor, residents, and tracking their participation (or lack of) help us measure the short term success of programs such as this.
Long Term Success The Creative Writing class provides the seniors living at Water's Edge of Bradenton with an outlet for their creativity, a place to gather and share ideas and to socialize.  Studies have shown that seniors who participate in group activities such as this realize multiple positive benefits like decreased feelings of depression and loneliness; feelings that have become an epidemic among our ever aging population.
Program Success Monitoring Participant feedback has been extremely positive for this program as well as its impact on their lives.  The instructor has indicated that the time she shares with the residents is always fun, energetic and she enjoys watching them find their inner voice with their imaginative and artistic work.
Program Success Examples JR is a female resident who has been at Water's Edge of Bradenton for some time.  JR has lived with a chronic hearing problem for most of her life and because of this, communication with others was challenging and frustrating for her.  As a result, she chose to isolate herself from others because of this communication barrier. When the Creative Writing Class was introduced to the residents, (and after some encouragement from the Activities Assistant) JR decided to join.  After only a few sessions, the instructor noticed a change in JR.  JR had finally found a place where she could be understood; her voice could be heard and she could clearly hear the voices of others through their written words.  She blossomed, made new friends and even had her work published in the resident newsletter. It provided her a way to express herself that she had not yet explored.  It truly changed her life.
Program Comments by Organization Renovations at Water's Edge of Bradenton are expected to be complete later in 2017.  Once the Assisted Living and Memory Care floors are occupied, it is anticipated that programs such as Music and Memory, Life Bio, LinkedSenior and adjunctive therapies like art, yoga and Tai Chi will be offered to residents.
