Impact Statement

Our senior community is very proud to be an affordable rental option in Sarasota.  Although, we are not subsidized by the federal government, we are a HUD 202 for the elderly.  Jefferson Center has 220 residents who rent the 209 efficiency and one bedroom apartments. Our rents range from $446 to $615 per month and the rent includes 24 hour maintenance, utilities and basic cable TV.

The Jefferson Center Foundation was established in 1978 to assist our residents.  Our accomplishments this year include:

·         Bus transportation for our seniors to the market, pharmacy, shopping, and outings and include visits to museums and restaurants.  We presently have a 20 passenger bus, but it is not wheelchair accessible.  Residents who use wheelchairs, scooters or walkers do not have safe access to ride the bus.

·         Providing the funds necessary for one day of chore services of housekeeping or grocery shopping when our resident returns from a hospital stay is critical for their quality of life.

·         Funding to provide for holiday events and celebrations which include Older Americans’ Month of May and our resident holiday meal and entertainment.

·         New residents receive kitchen pot holders reminding them “Never to walk away from the stove when cooking!” as a fire safety measure.

Needs Statement
Our most pressing needs:

Quality of life activities, celebrations and housekeeping services after a hospital stay annually approximately $4,000.
Background Statement
The Jefferson Center Foundation was established in 1978 to provide for all the little extras that the annual budget of Jefferson Center does not provide for.  Additional funds are needed each year to continue to provide the quality of life our residents deserve.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

As the President of the Board of Directors of the Jefferson Center Foundation, I am very proud of our mission to provide the little extras that make for a wonderful quality of life for our 220 residents. As our senior community reaches its 50th anniversary, providing the much needed affordable housing that Sarasota so desperately needs, has been both challenging and rewarding.

Our present challenge is transportation of our seniors. This year, we hope to trade in our present 20 passenger bus for a wheelchair accessible bus to assist those residents in wheelchairs, walkers and scooters. We ask for your support to help us with challenge.

Shan A. Mohammad, President

Jefferson Center Foundation, Inc.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

For almost 50 years Jefferson Center has provided a comfortable, safe home to many residents who need affordable housing.  Applicants must be 62 years or older, income verified to meet HUD established income limits and criminal background checks are done.  Jefferson Center is open to all persons that meet these requirements regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status and disability in compliance with the Fair Housing Act.

It is a privilege to be the Administrator of Jefferson Center.  Our present concern, is providing the much needed transportation for residents who need the assistance of a wheelchair accessible bus.
