You may know "meals on wheels," but Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee is much, much more. Through our services, we provide hope, healing, independence and friendship. In addition to the traditional home delivered meals to home bound or disabled seniors, we offer transportation, social activities, and enrichment opportunities.

The most unique aspect of Meals on Wheels PLUS is that we operate The Food Bank of Manatee, serving babies, families, and individuals in need through our network of local 115 partner agencies. Through this program and all the others we offer, Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee furthers its vision of "individuals in Manatee County have access to programs that end hunger and promote independent living." The Board of Directors and staff are committed to meeting the needs of our community and working so that no child, family, or senior goes hungry.

Recent Accomplishments:
  • Recognized again with the 4-Star Rating, by Charity Navigator, the largest independent evaluator of charities. 
  • Provided over 228,902 hot meals to over 1,500 homebound or disabled seniors.
  • Distributed 4.6 million pounds of food (about 4 million meals) to the hungry from The Food Bank of Manatee.
  • Served 100 clients at the Daybreak Adult Day Center in Lakewood Ranch, allowing for more services in the eastern Manatee County area.
  • Coordinated over 450 Volunteers to deliver meals and food to our neighbors in need.

Needs Statement
Through its various programs, Meals on Wheels PLUS has needs including:
  1. Food Bank of Manatee produce truck to pick up and distribute fresh produce to children and families fighting hunger. (Approximately $50,000)
      2.  Meals on Wheels meal sponsorship for a home-bound senior citizen ($50 per week, $200 per month, $1,200 per year) and The Food Bank of Manatee Emergency Food Basket sponsors, ($100 per family).
      3.  The Food Bank of Manatee Food Barrels to promote community engagement of collecting food for neighbors needing hunger relief ($5,000 for 100 barrels).
      4.  The Food Bank of Manatee needs Electric Pallet Jacks to coordinate food distribution throughout the warehouse to support agencies during food pick-up ($5,000).
      5.   Daybreak client sponsorship for Adult Daycare for seniors in need of social and emotional interaction while giving their caregivers a respite ($500 - 1,000 per senior).
Background Statement
In 1972, Meals on Wheels of Manatee, Inc. was founded to provide hot, nutritious noontime meals to elderly and disabled residents of Manatee County. The organization has grown throughout the years, and the “plus” was adopted as part of its name, to represent its many additional services. Meals on Wheels PLUS now offers an unrivaled continuum of care for seniors AND the hungry in Manatee County.
Programs focusing on seniors include adult day care, congregate dining, home delivered meals, transportation, and community outreach. The organization also operates The Food Bank of Manatee, which provides food to needy children, families, and individuals through a network of over 100 local social service agencies, food pantries, and soup kitchens.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
I learned about charitable giving from my parents, who supported Meals on Wheels PLUS (MOWP) and other local organizations. The very first Tropical Nights annual fundraiser was held at our family home more than 20 years ago, so I have been aware of this important cause for at least that long! I chose to become personally involved by being on the Board of Directors so I could have a bigger impact in our community's fight against hunger. I am proud of the accomplishments MOWP has made over the years, and I look forward to the many more that will come.
There are a number of challenges facing nonprofits today, but the primary ones for MOWP include financially supporting the many necessary programs it provides for the community. With reductions in government funding, more emphasis needs to be put on generating ongoing revenue for nutrition and senior services. The other challenge lies with how to combat the belief that MOWP programs are only for low-income individuals. On the contrary, different payment scales exist, from full payments to partial or none, based on individual capabilities. While the home-delivered meal service may provide the only nutritious meal that a low-income senior may have in a day, for seniors who are financially secure, the meals are a choice for convenience and healthy living. Through added education and awareness in the community, I am hopeful that the demand for MOWP's necessary and high quality services will grow, allowing the organization to provide for the most needy members of our community.
I am excited about the future of Meals on Wheels PLUS and about my role in helping to further its mission "to assist individuals to live independently by providing nutrition and caring supportive services." 
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee serves so many different populations in the community. Not only do we provide hot meals and warm smiles to homebound seniors, but we help struggling families with Emergency Food Baskets so they can get back on their feet. Families are able to stay together longer, as caregivers and their loved ones enjoy the Daybreak Adult Day Center.  Seniors who no longer drive can still be independent by utilizing our transportation services, and those who are still active can stay healthy at the Enrichment Center.
The staff at Meals on Wheels PLUS is also special, because they truly care about the organization's mission and the people we serve. We all work as efficiently as possible, with one small managerial staff for all programs. I am proud to say that our administrative and fundraising expenses are extremely low, and 100% of donor dollars stay here in our community, helping the children, families, and seniors who need us most.
Through Home-Delivered Meals and Congregate Dining, senior citizens who are homebound or disabled and can no longer cook for themselves receive hot, nutritious meals. Caring volunteers deliver an average of 775 meals each day to homebound seniors. For many clients, it is the only hot meal they will eat that day, and the volunteer is the only person they will see. At congregate or "friendship" dining centers, mobile seniors avoid isolation by interacting with others through games and crafts, while also enjoying a healthy meal. Meals are approved by a registered dietician to fulfill one third of the daily recommended nutrition for a female 72 years of age.

Program Success Monitoring
Trained Case Managers perform in-home assessments of each individual requesting food assistance to ensure that services offered will meet their needs. Once someone becomes a client, case managers maintain periodic communication and re-evaluate them on an annual basis. Clients often receive meals for many years, until health issues necessitate professional care in a nursing facility or the client passes away. The additional time that individuals can remain living independently in their homes demonstrates the program's success, whether it is for ten days or ten years.
Program Success Examples
Many clients only have family out of town, who are unable to help care for them. For example, one client who had suffered a recent stroke had no family nearby and could not cook her own meals. Her options were to enter an assisted living facility or utilize the services of Meals on Wheels PLUS. While she was reluctant at first, the nutritious meals and friendly volunteers soon became the highlight of her day. In a recent note, she wrote: "God bless all those who prepare the meals and bring them to my door each day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
The Food Bank of Manatee, operated by Meals on Wheels PLUS, is the largest hunger prevention organization in Manatee County. Through its network of 100 local partner organizations, approximately 4.5 million pounds of food are distributed annually, to children and families in need. The Food Bank also assembles Emergency Family Baskets and Baby Baskets, as a temporary form of assistance for families in crisis.
Additionally, Weekend Summer Backpacks were added in 2015 to our programming, to fill the gap that was evident when school was out for the summer. We provided 500 backpacks weekly in 2015, with each pack of food containing 6 meals and 3 snacks. These food items are kid-friendly and can be prepared by the child him or herself. Our goal in 2016 is to increase our weekly backpacks by 50%, to 750 packs each week.

Food inventory and distribution are carefully recorded at The Food Bank of Manatee, to assess its performance. Staff at The Food Bank monitors partner agencies to ensure proper food handling, and requests feedback on distribution activities. Emergency Basket forms are submitted to The Food Bank from numerous agencies, and success is also based on fulfillment of those requests.
Program Success Examples
In recent years, The Food Bank of Manatee has successfully responded to the growing need of the community. As the economy declined, the need for assistance increased and The Food Bank's distribution tripled. Through its many partnerships, The Food Bank is able to disperse larger quantities of time-sensitive produce, meat, dairy, etc., than ever before. For example, a local farmer had XX pallets of tomatoes that would rot if not consumed. Within 24 hours, The Food Bank staff was able to contact enough partner agencies to distribute the produce, thus feeding people and avoiding waste.
For caregivers and their loved ones, Daybreak is an essential program in Manatee County. It is the only licensed Adult Day Care provider in the area, offering respite for stressed caregivers and theraputic services for the frail elderly. Daybreak is open Monday through Friday, allowing caregivers can work or attend to personal needs without worrying about leaving their loved one at home alone. Trained staff lead clients in games, crafts, and activities that help to restore a sense of purpose in their lives. Without the services for both caregivers and their loved ones, many more people would be in assisted living facilities, rather than enjoying life at home with family.

Short Term Success
Short-term success is measured by the health and wellbeing of both clients and their caregivers. Nearly 100% of clients report that their emotional state and physical capabilities were improved. Caregivers also report that they are less stressed and have a more positive outlook, knowing their loved one is receiving quality care.
Long Term Success
The long-term success of Daybreak Adult Day Services is measured in the delay or prevention of clients into assisted living facilities or nursing homes. At least 95% of clients enjoy higher quality of life when living with their families than alone in a facility, as a result of the care Daybreak provides.
Program Success Monitoring
Clients and caregivers are interviewed when they begin attending Daybreak, and they are surveyed periodically to determine their experience with the program. Staff monitors clients daily and notes any improvements or deterioration.
Program Success Examples
A woman moved her mother from a solitary life in New York City to live with her in Bradenton. The mother's health conditions had led to delusions and dimensia, so she could not be left home alone. The woman also needed to work and could not care for her mother during the day. Fortunately, Daybreak Adult Day Center was able to provide the daytime care that the woman needed for her mother. After the very first day, the initially reluctant mother was eager to return to Daybreak. She enjoyed listening to music from her past and participating in crafts with the other clients. Her life had been enriched and both the woman and her mother couldn't be happier with their experience.
This member-based transportation program is available to individuals age 60 and above who no longer drive or do not have a car. As a result of having access to the community on a regular basis, like shopping, doctor visits, or social appointments, senior citizens are less likely to feel isolated and depressed. Trained drivers provide door to door assistance for members. Senior Wheels gives members a sense of freedom and purpose that they are often lacking when staying home alone. This popular program was started in 2008 as a result of a partnership with the Senior Advocacy Council. It continues to grow, consisting of three Prius vehicles and 2 minivans to transport passengers around town in comfort. No other program like it extists in the area.

Bob is a resident in a mobile home park, where most of his neighbors are seasonal. His medical conditions prevent him from driving, so he rarely left his home before joining Senior Wheels. He now does his errands weekly, with the help of a Senior Wheels driver, and he even attends a Friendship Dining Center for activities a few times each week. His health has improved and he no longer feels like he is all alone, which is the main objective of this unique transportation program.

When there is a need in the local community related to seniors or the hungry, Meals on Wheels PLUS works to meet that need. Our Board of Directors and staff are dedicated to making sure that senior citizens can remain living independently, in their homes for as long as possible. We believe that a hot, fresh meal can nourish the spirit as well as the body of each homebound person we serve. We have never enforced a waiting list, despite funding challenges, as we firmly believe that no one in need should go hungry.

Maribeth Phillips was appointed to CEO by the Board of Directors, following the retirement of Ellen J. Campbell. Phillips has been involved in the Manatee County community for 10 years and is an active supporter of Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee. She previously held the position of Vice President of Human Resources for both Phoenix Ink and Gevity (now Trinet), in Bradenton. Along with her human resource management background, Phillips worked in sales for Neal Communities and has extensive experience in marketing, networking, business development, event planning and fundraising. Phillips is a past chair of the Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Committee and is currently on the Board of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

Collaborations are very important in many programs of Meals on Wheels PLUS, because they help us to better serve the community.  We work very closely with Manatee County, providing transportation, meal service, and daytime care for seniors receiving government assistance. Through operation of The Food Bank of Manatee, we partner with approximately 100 local agencies to distribute food to the hungry. These agencies consist of independent food pantries, social services, and soup kitchens. Collaborating with other community agencies allows us to help many more people than working alone, and it helps prevent duplication of services. Some of those we work with include: American Red Cross, Children's Academy of SW Florida, Boys & Girls Clubs, FL Sheriffs Youth Ranch, Healthy Start, Project Heart for The School District of Manatee, Feeding Empty Little Tummies, Hope Family Services, Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, and many local church food pantries.

At Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee, we take great care to be good stewards of our donors' contributions and their trust. We strive to serve as many as possible, putting 95 cents of each dollar back into our programs. We do receive some government funding, but approximately 65% of the funds needed to operate our programs must come from individual donations, special events, corporate sponsorships, and grants.
