Impact Statement
The Choral Society has just completed its 72nd consecutive annual production of the Christmas portion of G. F. Handel's Messiah. This production has been known as Sarasota's traditional kick-off to the Holiday Season for many years. Our performance provide a sense of celebration and well-being to our listeners for the Christmas Season. We have provided financial assistance to members of Sarasota Young Voices for membership, scholarships, and group trips. We have donated CDs and DVDs of our organization and tickets to our performances to area nursing homes and returned servicemen. This year we saw an approximate 30% increase in membership, as well as attendance at our performances. We are actively pursuing means to continue this growth in the future. We are planning a special event for our 75th anniversary performance in 2019.
Needs Statement
  • Underwrite our production costs with a goal of returning to Van Wezel. Currently, it runs about $14,000 to produce Messiah. This cost may be broken down into various subcategories for those who would like to just underwrite a portion of our productions.
  • Increase funding to establish a music scholarship program.
  • Increase membership.
  • Increase the number of Choral Society performances each year.
  • Diversify our performances and increase attendance.
Background Statement

We are a 501.c.3 not-for-profit charitable organization founded to support choral activities of all kind. The group was loosely organized in the mid-1930s, took its present form and started performing Handel's Messiah in 1944. Membership is open to anyone interested in music, choral singing in particular, and we do not discriminate against any race, creed, color, or religious affiliation. Members range in age from 10 years old up to in their 80's, and some have been members for 40 years or more. Our members come not only from the Sarasota area but quite a few drive from Tampa, St. Pete, Arcadia, North Port, Port Charlotte, and other areas as well.
The Sarasota Choral Society is comprised of two arms: The Sarasota Choral Society, Inc. which deals with the logistics and functions of choral performance, and The Sarasota Choral Society Foundation, Inc. which controls and disburses charitable funds and scholarships.

Currently, we perform the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah around the first weekend in December of each year. We are looking to expand our performances to 2 or 3 a year with an event in the spring and one in the summer. Choral Society performances have been favorably compared to larger organizations based in major metropolitan areas and we work hard to present the highest quality production possible in every performance. The all volunteer chorus varies in number each year but has as many as 300 voices performing on stage and the Christmas performance features a full orchestra, organ, and world-class professional soloists.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

Dear Friends,

It is an honor for me to spend this afternoon with you in celebrating the humble birth of a child who brought peace and hope to our world. I sincerely wish that the words you will hear today, put to music so powerfully by Handel, will continue to stay with you in this season of fast paced activities. I cannot give enough thanks to the board of directors of the Sarasota Choral Society, who work tirelessly to make this annual event a successful one. It always brings me such joy to work with the very dedicated SCS singers who return every year, and also to welcome our many new singers. It is so exciting to see our organization grow year after year, and it is my sincere hope that the Sarasota Choral Society will continue to provide this uplifting tradition for many years to come.

May the spirit of Christmas be with you and your family!

 Joyeux Noël!

Geneviève

Our production of the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah has been a Sarasota tradition unbroken each year since 1944. With the cost of venues and other facets of production increasing annually we have been able to continue to bring these first-class performances to the public at very affordable ticket prices.  We are currently looking to find corporate/individual sponsors and grants from other organizations to help us offset these expenses and initiate some new programs, not the least is a scholarship program to benefit area youth in their music education.

The only members/staff that receive payment are the Artistic Director, musicians, and soloists. Other than the hiring of musicians and performing artists, the rest of the work done on behalf of The Sarasota Choral Society is done by unpaid volunteers. We do not keep office space or have other kinds of expensive overhead. Therefore, almost all of our expenses go to meet the costs of our productions. Donors may be confident that any gifts/charitable donations will be used in ways that will directly benefit our productions and programs.
