Background Statement
The Sarasota Boxing Club is a throwback to the good old days, a gym where every member is treated with special care and dignity.  The trainer addresses each and every member's specific need(s) with a tailor-made program.  Participants at the club run the gamut - an 8 year old boy being bullied at school desperate for some self-defense, an overweight female yearning for as exercise regime that will burn calories to take off pounds, an aspiring pre-teenage tennis prodigy (Maria Sharapova) looking for a cross-training method to give her the edge, a 21 year old amateur boxer who defeats 2 nationally ranked opponents or a professional boxer who fights on the biggest boxing show in history.
The Sarasota Boxing Club, created in 1985, has had the most successful amateur boxing program in the state of Florida since it started being competitive in 1989.  Numerous state and regional champions have trained at the club.  Several of the athletes have performed very successfully on the national level, seven being ranked in the top ten in the USA.  On the professional scene, Wilen has trained three boxers who fought for World Titles, one of whom won the world title.
The creator, director and recently inducted Hall of Fame Boxing Trainer of the Sarasota Boxing Club is Harold Wilen.  Harold a former New York City resident and successful boxer had been a social worker in the Sarasota School System since 1983.  He had a total of 39 years in the Social Work and teaching field.  He received his Masters Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University in New Jersey.  He retired in 2012.  He recently became the president of his Rotary Club.
"Coach", as Mr. Wilen is better known around the club is a teacher of the art of boxing.  He has studied the best techniques of boxing's masters both past and present. He incorporates his philosophy of dedication-love-respect into his teaching and training programs.  With this unique integration, coach is able to bring the knowledge of a world-ranked professional to a young boy learning how to hold his hands up correctly or a white-collar businessman or woman fascinated with the lure of an authentic boxing gym.
Mr. Wilen has devised a special training method utilizing the sport of boxing combined with the teaching of dedication-love-respect to create more powerful and productive citizens in the Sarasota-Bradenton area.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

There have been many successes in the 30 years of the Sarasota Boxing Club.  A couple of the most notable successes are the top amateur boxing record in the State of Florida and young men and women redirecting their lives with a new dedication and commitment to do well in their chosen sport or to simply to get physically fit and more disciplined in their everyday life through the medium of boxing.

The greatest challenge for the Sarasota Boxing Club is the personal lives / distractions of the members being so powerful that even the strong love and respect shown to them by the director, coaches and other club members would not be enough to overcome these outside influences.
Sequential physical fitness training from "the ground up" taught with attention to details of technique which give great focus and great purpose to his/her daily life.

Short Term Success
Every participant has his or her own schedule. Sometimes participants join the program for one day per week, others every day each week. Short-term success typically depends on how frequently participants attend.  In the first interaction, we learn how the student is doing in school and make the students feel comfortable. They also understand that this is a place of safety and one in which communication is valued. Short-term success means that the students feel supported. After one month, there is usually a change in the students--more focused, self-disciplined, confident, communicative with other members.
Long Term Success
Some participants are part of this program for short periods of time, and many return frequently and remain with the program. Typically after 6 months to a year of participation, students may see better grades, and parents notice more respect from their students at home. We hear that students are more willing to perform household chores. Adults participate to the program as a way to deal with anger management in a healthy way and avoid legal issues and incarceration. Both adults and students participate to lose weight.
Program Success Monitoring
Because we work so closely with each participant, it is easy to see the difference we make in the lives of our students. Through informal interviews with students and parents, and real measurements such as differences in weight and reduced incidences of bullying, we know we are effective.
Program Success Examples
Recently an obese 19 year old senior in high school came to the Sarasota Boxing Club to lose weight. After 7 months of active participation, the student has lost 62 pounds, without the use of diet pills or medical procedures. We have significantly improved his self esteem and physical health.
Discipline and Dedication:  The heart of the training program focuses on the foundation of good work ethics and family values which are established through the fundamental principles of dedication for success.
Mentor Program:  Student Athletes and members are mentored by successful business professionals in addition to his/her training and the club.  This program prepares the athlete for life outside the boxing world.
Tutoring:   This program meets the specific needs of the student athlete to assist him/her in the classroom or the youth and/or young adult entering the workforce to achieve a desired goal.

Population Served General/Unspecified At-Risk Populations Children and Youth (0 - 19 years)
Short Term Success The programs improve the lives through establishing family values of dedication-love-respect to result in gang abatement, not leaving school, stopping the use/abuse of drugs and/or alcohol.
Long Term Success Making more powerful and productive citizens ultimately makes for a more enriched society.
Program Success Monitoring Numerous tools are used to track success.  Primarily through counselor's notes and personal interviews. Test scores are regularly utilized for the grade school aged members.
Program Success Examples One recent success.  A young man has stopped using alcohol because it affects his training.  His dedication to the sport of boxing has created a more focused and determined individual.  Another member leaves a gang after 2 years of association and dedicates himself to the sport of boxing and his family.
