Impact Statement
  1.  As funds allow, we continue to grow our inventory of musical equipment and musical offerings and soon hope to not have to borrow any equipment from our host.
  2. We continue to advance the art of handbells through a successful concert series that included churches from Sun City Center to Sarasota to Englewood.

  3.  We produced a "Christmas in July" fundraising concert in which we raised over $1,500 for Family Promise of Sarasota.

  4. We organized and produced "The Sounds of Freedom" a musical salute to veterans concert which include Ring Sarasota, The First Brass of Sarasota, Church of the Palms Chancel Choir, Pine Shores Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and was hosted by ABC 7 News Meteorologist John Scalzi. The proceeds from this concert, $3,000, were donated to Manasota Operation Troop Support (MOTS), a local non-profit that takes care of deployed local military personnel and their families.

Background Statement

Ring Sarasota, Inc. was conceived and formed in the fall of 2010 by our founding director, Rick Holdsworth, to create a handbell organization that would bring the best handbell ringers from the area together to ring advanced literature and be able to educate the community about the art of handbell ringing through concerts and workshops.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

As president of Ring Sarasota, I am pleased and honored to be a part of an organization that fosters the art of handbell ringing and includes talented ringers from the greater Sarasota locale. The music arrangements available to handbell performers have become increasingly more sophisticated and diverse in recent years. We enjoy bringing these amazing works to the local arts community.

Since our inception in 2010, we have performed throughout the area. In addition to our regular season concerts, we added holiday themed concerts partnering with other local groups as well as a fundraising concert for Family Promise.

To accommodate requests for educational opportunities, Ring Sarasota formed a small, flexible group of handbell ringers that has the ability to perform in smaller settings and expose the community to our music. We are targeting libraries, schools, retirement centers and venues that cannot accommodate the entire handbell choir.

Our success has not come without a search for resources. A handbell choir requires at least one full 5-octave set of handbells, a set of hand chimes, performance tables and pads, travel cases as well as miscellaneous associated percussion equipment. These must be insured and transported to our performance venues. We received a private donation that enabled us to purchase a 5-octave set of handbells after our first season. Since that time other major donations helped us in the purchase of our own portable tables and table covers, as well as additional equipment. The remainder of the equipment is on loan from our director’s employer, Pine Shores Presbyterian Church. Through the members’ dues and performance fees, we are beginning to accumulate a treasury that will address our additional needs. We continue in our pursuit of private donations through sponsorships as well as the sale of CDs.

For our eighth season, our music will represent various decades during the 20th Century, showcasing the versatility of handbells, their arrangers and composers. We hope to expand our audience and continue to entertain the community with our unique instruments.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
Programs
Description Ring Sarasota’s season 8 music explores music as it developed over the 20th Century.  Just as the 1900’s brought complex events and changes to our world, music evolved equally as quickly.  Our concert music this season offers examples from some of these significant eras.

At the turn of the century music paralleled the impressionist artists.  Claire de Lune and Moon Over the Ruined Castle are excellent examples of music that allow the listener to conjure mental images of their themes.  The development of the jazz era, leading into the blues is represented by Georgia on my Mind.

The post-war era produced happier music for those who wanted to sing and dance.  We offer Blue Tango and Fly Me to the Moon as mid-century examples.  But no 20th century music retrospective is complete without a song from the Beatles.  For us it is Hey Jude, transcribed for handbells by our own Rick Holdsworth.  We complete late century pop music with The Prayer, originally performed by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.

Handbell music has also evolved over the last half of the century.  Our season includes some of the new music composed over the turn of our current century; pieces written to showcase our exciting instrument.

Short Term Success
Our success shows when there are members in the audience who for the first time are enjoying the sound of handbells being played. We always offer hands on experience after our concerts so people can experience handbells up close. We always have a lot of participation.
Long Term Success
We strive to bring the art of handbell ringing to our local audience, educating and entertaining them at the same time. Our annual budget includes monies for new music, equipment insurance, director's stipend, printing, equipment transportation to/from concerts, licensing/fees, and to fund new educational projects.

We currently borrow handbell equipment from our host, Pine Shores Presbyterian Church.  Our annual budget does not include funds to purchase our own equipment which not only includes equipment to replace what we are borrowing, but also includes additional musical equipment that will allow us to expand our ringing capabilities and musical selections.
Program Success Monitoring As a group performing music we measure our success in the reaction we get from our audiences.  We also measure our success through future concert requests, new fans on our Facebook page, and names added to our friends of Ring Sarasota email listing.
Program Success Examples One example of our success is being invited in season 4 to join forces with the Bay Chorale for a joint concert at the Neel Auditorium in Bradenton, and being asked again to join with them for this sixth season..  This past season 5, we were invited to be the opening night concert for the Florida State Handbell Festival in Fruitland Park, FL.  We also ended our fifth season with a very successful "Christmas in July" concert where we raised funds and awareness for Family Promise of Sarasota.

We have now completed seven season.  We continue to whittle down our equipment wish list of the basics of what our group needs to go forward.  We are blessed in the fact that Pine Shores Presbyterian Church continues to allow us the use of their equipment and rehearsal facilities as we grow and get established.  We look forward to serving the community for many years through our music.

Financial Comments by Organization
The challenge for a young organization such as ours is building our musical equipment inventory so that we do not have to borrow musical equipment from our host.  Up to this point, most of our income is being used to purchase equipment. We are still in need of additional equipment.  There is a unique opportunity to receive name recognition and make a difference for donors.

We are looking for additional sponsors and underwriters that we list in our concert programs and also on our webpage.  These sponsors and underwriters would assist us in meeting our budget and also in meeting our goals of being a totally independent organization.
