The Marching program is a large public display of our students' abilities, a place in which members perform for the community and provide an identity in Sarasota. The Sarasota High School Mighty Sailor Marching Band has a long tradition at Sarasota High School.

Within the past few years, the Mighty Sailor Band program has been able to expand their offerings to include a competitive Indoor Percussion Ensemble (Gold Medalist - 2017), Winter Guard (Gold Medalist - 2017 and Silver Medalist - 2016), and new in 2018 an Indoor Winds program.   There will be approximately 60 students who will be participating in the programs listed above.  Sarasota High School is the ONLY High School in Sarasota County offering these types of programs.

Programs
Description The core of the program is the Concert Ensembles, in which the students are trained in the technique and artistry of music. Concert Ensembles include Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Sailor Symphony, Chamber Orchestra and Percussion Ensembles.

The Solo & Ensemble allows the students to take greater musical responsibility by learning a new music outside of the regular of the regular ensemble and becoming a larger portion of the overall music. Jazz is America's music and with the legacy of the Admirals at Sarasota High, it is important to the school and community that we continue to foster individual growth through the study of jazz literature and improvisation.

In additional to the programs mentioned above, Sarasota also offers a competitive Winter Guard, Winter Percussion and Indoor Winds program.    These types of programs are not offered at any other Sarasota County High School.

Short Term Success

The marching band earned a superior rating at the Florida Bandmasters Association Marching MPA.  Both of our concert bands earned Excellent Ratings at their Music Performance Assessments.  We also were the Florida Federation of Color Guard Circuit Class AAA State Champions as well as Concert A Percussion State Champions.

Long Term Success

The band program has consistently improved in both quality and quantity over the past 4 years.  The marching band has earned 3 straight superior ratings, the color guard has placed in the top 2 for the past 2 years, and the concert bands have earned excellent ratings every year for the past 3 years.  The group has traveled to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia and has plans for another trip in the 2018-2019 school year.

Program Success Monitoring
Florida Bandmasters Association appoint judges to evaluate the performance of the ensembles as a whole. The band currently consists of 70 students who are involved in the marching band, and over 120 students who are involved in the wind ensemble, concert band, and jazz band.

Several of our other programs compete in the Florida Federation of Colorguard Circuit where judges are assigned to score and rank each ensemble based on their program and excellence.

Financials Comments
Financial Comments by Organization The challenge facing the group is the cut in funding and the economic hardship facing many of the families that make increasing dues or other options of passing off the shortfall unfeasible.  There is a deficit every year in the amount required to fund the programs and the revenue raised.  This is the principal issue facing the group.
Financial Comments by Foundation Financial information was taken from the organization's Federal 990.  Contributions include foundation and corporate support.
