Moments of Pride 
1. Strengthened our academic and literacy programs by participating in the Age Level & Beyond Reading program during our 2015 Summer Camp and became a pilot site for the National Girls Inc. Literacy Program.

2. Evaluated all of the programs we offer and made improvements to ensure we are are in alignment with the high quality programs offered by Girls Inc. nationally.

3. Expanded our High School Initiative to serve additional schools and girls during the 2015 – 1016 school year.

4. The 2016 Celebration Luncheon earned the highest net revenue ever in the organization's history.

5. Became an official “Girls Who Code” site, in partnership with their national organization.

Goals for 2016-2017 

1. Expand K – 8th grade after-school and summer programming to provide services to additional girls in under served areas.

2. Expand our High School Initiative to serve additional area high schools.

3. Develop a Family Strengthening Program that will provide mental health, case management, and parenting education services for our girls and their families.

4. Strengthen our fitness, sports, and nutrition programming.

5. Seek capital funding for building improvements to ensure we are maintaining a healthy and safe environment.

Needs Statement

1. $35k per year to hire a fitness, health, and nutrition instructor.

2. $70k per year to provide daily transportation for the girls from local schools. 

3. $75k per year for mental health and case management services to address the ongoing needs of many of our girls and families.

4. $120k for building improvements in order to ensure a safe and healthy environment.

5. $160k per year to provide scholarships for girls to attend our after-school and summer camp programs.

Background Statement
In 1973, Girls Clubs of Sarasota County was formed through the initiative of community leaders in order to provide a safe place for girls to receive after-school enrichment programs. Community support allowed the organization to create a multi-use facility on Tuttle Avenue complete with a pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, classrooms and computer lab. During the 1980s, Girls Incorporated established a foundation to manage endowment funds and backed the creation of Coquille, an auxiliary, volunteer-based fundraising branch that attracted significant attention and participation from the community. During this time the agency began to implement the new research-based programs that were being disseminated by the Girls Incorporated National Resource Center. In 1989, following the lead of our national organization, Girls Club of Sarasota County became Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County, a local affiliate of the national nonprofit youth organization.

During the 1990s, Girls Incorporated undertook several outreach initiatives made possible by grant-making organizations, private donors and community support. In 1991, the Newtown Project was implemented to provide the girls and parents of the Newtown community access to the agency's programs. In 1996, Educational Talent Search (ETS) was initiated to assist high school girls in career counseling, educational counseling and financial aid awareness. In 1997, Girls Incorporated launched services into south Sarasota County. Girls Inc. delivered prevention-based programs in collaboration with school officials, community leaders and local families.

 In September 2007, Girls Incorporated became the only after-school program in Sarasota County to implement a unique mini society referred to as Dream Harbor. As part of this model, students build and run a society within their after-school and summer programs. Young entrepreneurs produce goods and services, elected officials establish laws, and Peace Keepers maintain order in the halls. All citizens earn wages, pay taxes, invest in products, and deposit and borrow money from the bank. Certified and trained teachers take the role of facilitators, enabling their students to effectively run their own businesses and government agencies. Each child has a role in running that world with student achievement as the ultimate goal. Partnerships with local businesses and agencies show the girls the connection to the real world and create learning opportunities.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

I became involved with Girls Inc. as a lifeguard when I was 16. I walked into what I thought was a fun summer job - instead I had a life-changing experience. Even as a teenager I could see the transformative work that occurs at Girls Inc. I never forgot that summer and in fact stayed in touch with one of the girls I met in the pool. She was the first in her family to go to college and is now an LPN. I know she would agree that her success is directly attributable to Girls Inc.

Fast forward a couple of decades and I "came back" to Girls Inc. after attending the Celebration Luncheon in 2009. While many things had changed, including enhanced curriculum and expanded capacity, many things were still very much the same. Again, I saw firsthand the positive impact Girls Inc. has on our girls. I joined the Board of Directors and am currently serving as President for the second year.
Girls Inc. provides girls with life-changing experiences and solutions to the unique challenges girls face. This is the "Girls Inc. Experience." Our extraordinary staff and dedicated volunteers build relationships in a girls-only space that is safe and where girls find support, respect, and high expectations. Our research-based programs in the areas of math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention, and sports participation provide girls with the life skills and knowledge to set goals, overcome obstacles, and improve academic performance. At Girls Inc., our girls grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

The future of Girls Inc. is brighter than ever. While we continue to provide high quality after-school and summer programming, we also continually enhance our programs to meet the growing needs of girls through initiatives such as literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Our girls also have the unique opportunity of participating in our Dream Harbor mini society. In this everyday economics lesson, the girls run payroll, earn wages, pay taxes, and produce, price, and market goods and services for our monthly Market Day.


The hard work, dedication, and compassion of the staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers ensures that these efforts are carried out with the best interest of our girls always in mind. They are truly a group of individuals who are committed to our girls and extremely mission driven. It is also through the support of our wonderful donors that we are able to help turn girls’ dreams into reality. We believe great things happen when we work together toward the shared goals of improving the lives of our girls and nurturing future leaders of our community.   • Through National Girls Inc. programs, our girls learn about literacy, math and science, careers, health and sexuality, leadership and community action, sports, self-reliance and life skills, and culture and heritage.
  • At Girls Inc. Sarasota, all girls also participate in a mini society called DreamHarbor, their very own all-girls community where each girl has a job, earns a pay check, votes, and pays taxes. Girls participate in business ventures including banking, government, tech team, retail, and catering.

  • Awareness: Our National office is creating a five year communication plan which we will be able to utilize once it is completed. However we need to continue our efforts in branding Girls Inc. as a high achieving agency in all aspects, now. However, due to a limited budget, we are forced to search for avenues with little associated costs. We are moving forward in our social media efforts and also creative partnerships with various media outlets.  
  • Advocates/Supporters: We continually work to identify community members who can play a role in furthering our mission. Those individuals can serve in a myriad of ways including; board membership, committee membership, mentors, volunteers, advocates in their spheres of influence, donors, etc. 
  • Our building sits empty during the school year days. We are searching for a possible renter who would occupy the building during the day and provide us with additional revenues.
