Background Statement

Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center has been providing pregnancy related support services in Sarasota County for 15 years. We provide hope, pregnancy resources and referrals, and limited, licensed medical services to women in Sarasota County who are in need of a support network.

Our services are all without charge, and include:

  • Pregnancy tests
  • Limited-scan ultrasounds by licensed ultrasound technicians, reviewed by the Center's Medical Director
  • Limited STI/STD tests
  • Information on all pregnancy options and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Peer counseling
  • Parenting classes on over 150 topics
  • Men’s support for expectant dads
  • Women's support group
  • Referrals to over 25 local agencies
  • Women’s bible studies for abortion recovery

The Center provides clients with opportunities to receive practical material assistance through our Earn While You Learn program, where women can receive diapers, wipes, baby clothing, supplies and more for their immediate needs through each baby’s first year.

The Center provides services to women from 12 to 50 years old, and while 60% of our clients are under 24, over 20% are over the age of 30. Therefore, we are seeing women in all walks of life, with very different needs.

What else does the Center do? It provides many community referrals, helping clients plan for the changes happening in their lives, including for early learning support and childcare. Adoption referrals are made by the Center, too, to multiple agencies in the area.

SMPC served over 350 new clients last year, and assisted over 400 clients in total. We have a terrific staff, an extremely professional oversight group through Care Net and our Board of Directors, licensed medical personnel, and a passion for what we do. Our goal is to grow exponentially, to serve over 500 women and families annually. We are adding resources in the form of more volunteers, and are seeking funding for expanded services and outreach.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
It is truly an honor to serve as Board Chair for Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center. The members of our Board care deeply about the vision and mission of the Center, and donate financial resources as well as their time to make sure our goals are reached. We have a treasure in our Executive Director, Jennifer Carey, who brings wisdom, consistent leadership, and caring compassion to this ministry. Our staff provide the highest quality service to our clients, whether it be medical or educational services. They demonstrate professionalism and a genuine love for each person who walks through our door. And, what can I say about our volunteers, an essential component of the operation of the Center, who donate countless hours to our success. Then, there are our donors and supporters who provide the funding to make our program possible. These dedicated members of our community are the backbone of our organization. Over 500 people came together recently to celebrate the Center, and to recommit their resouces to make this mission successful.
The Center provides quality services for women and men who are confronted with crucial decisions concerning their pregnancy. Many in our community lack the resources necessary to make informed decisions, lacking the family support they need to parent a child. The Center lovingly comes alongside these young people, gives them accurate information, offers them opportunities to learn, and connects them with other services within our community. All of this is done out of a respect for life which we value from the time of conception throughout the life of a person. Our faith commitment guides our steps as we minister to the families who come to us for help, which we provide without charge.
Our new location near Sarasota Memorial Hospital, increased outreach efforts, more staff, and increased hours of operation are making it possible to reach more and more families who are either in crisis due to pregnancy, or just need a little extra help along the way. So you can see why it is an honor to serve as Board Chair of this great organization.
Rod Myers
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center was founded to come alongside women in the community to provide support regarding unexpected pregnancies when assistance is needed.  We serve each woman with care specific to her needs and decisions, respecting her choices.  Every client is equipped with information and numerous community referrals, given a peer counselor for each visit, offered a limited-scan ultrasound, and provided access to parenting education and material items.  We love our clients, who teach us every day about perseverance and determination.  They, in turn, leave each visit having been listened to, lifted up and affirmed.
Fathers of the babies are important, too, and a Dad Life program is growing and giving expectant dads support and preparation for life changes that are on their way.
Serving as a translator for some Spanish speaking clients, I have had the opportunity to be present in the ultrasound room when women have seen their babies for the first time on the ultrasound screen.  That is a beautiful moment, where the mother falls in love with her child.  At the Center, 83% of the time when a woman views the ultrasound, she chooses to parent or the adoption option.
For women seeking post-abortion support, we offer outreach and healing through group support services.
Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center is a light-filled place, with caring staff and volunteers, providing the unique service of trained peer counseling along with limited medical services.  Ongoing, positive client surveys and growth by word of mouth affirm our mission and make us eager to serve every day.
As Executive Director, I am thankful for this opportunity to be a part of the Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center.  For over eight years, it has been on my heart to serve, first as a volunteer, then as a member of the Board of Directors, and now on staff.  My life has been transformed as I have shifted out of the business world and moved from helping companies improve their results to now supporting women's quality of life.  The rewards for this work are intangible, yet tremendous.
Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center's Earn While You Learn Program provides clients and caregivers with an opportunity to learn how to be the best parents and support network they can be.  The program helps to understand what to expect in pregnancy and beyond.
Through regular lessons that include discussions, videos and worksheets, they learn important and interesting information about the pregnancy and the baby.
Clients earn points for each completed lesson which allow them to "purchase" baby supplies and other materials that are donated to the Center.
Trained peer advocates and staff carry out the program with a listening ear, and provide and referrals for up to 25 local agencies that provide additional assistance during this time of transition and change.

Short Term Success Near term achievements are to provide parenting education for 100% of participants, to help create a support network that lifts up the quality of life of each client's family.
Long Term Success The program's long-term success is shown by 85% of women and their families receiving material items for their babies, and 95% of women being provided with referral services for further care and support.
Program Success Monitoring
Program success is monitored through client surveys and reviewed monthly by the Executive Director.  Effectiveness of plan participation is also reviewed on an ongoing basis by the Center Services Director.
Program Success Examples
100% of client surveys over the last year have been positive.  Client testimonies include:
  • "I have been able to learn about many different aspects of parenting with a wonderful group of women standing by my side and supporting me through a life changing time."
  • "This is for sure the best community service for pregnant women that I've participated in."
  • I always feel so welcomed here and I am learning so much.  I love coming to the Pregnancy Center!"
To follow is a Earn While You Learn Program offered to fathers of the babies.
Many fathers of the babies have let us know that they are looking for good role models.  Through a new group called Dads' Life, we are beginning to offer support services to equip them. This all got started by a core group of men spending a significant amount of time assessing various men's groups in the area to pull out best practices for how they could come alongside expectant fathers and provide support.
Dads with experience are now providing guidance and discussing fatherhood topics with men on a new life journey.  Our expectation is that this will translate into more men participating in the new Earn While You Learn men's curriculum.
Budget $1,000

Short Term Success Our near-term goal is to build a fatherhood group that has a high percentage of returning participants (75% or higher).  Another expected improvement would be enrollment in the new men's Earn While You Learn curriculum at the Center.
Long Term Success Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center's goal is to provide fatherhood support services to all fathers-to-be, and educational opportunities to all men who will be involved in raising clients' children.
Program Success Monitoring Success is monitored by interviews and feedback from the facilitators, in addition to client interviews by Center staff.  A group survey will be developed in 2014.
Program Success Examples
An example of one program success is that of a father-to-be mentoring another expectant dad regarding budgeting and finances to plan for upcoming baby expenditures.  Another participant's father found the program to be the only one he had seen that encouraged his son to be an engaged dad.  One young man in the group found that it motivated him to stay in school and find part-time employment to support his family.
Other program successes will be documented throughout the year.
Description Imagine Together pairs a dedicated group of volunteer moms with expectant and new mothers to talk informally about their pregnancies and babies' early years.  It is an opportunity for these women to build a support network and gain confidence during pregnancy.

Short Term Success Program participants are getting information on resources for local health related and other social services.  Group leaders are able to follow up with clients to determine if the care needed has been received.
Long Term Success For women participating in the program, 90% are expected to participate in ongoing pre- and post-natal education at the Center.  100% will receive some level of material support in the form of diapers, wipes, clothes and other much needed items.
Program Success Monitoring Client testimonies and interviews determine the success of the program, and the feedback has been resoundingly positive.
Program Success Examples Young mothers have been able to strengthen their relationships with the fathers of the babies' families, resulting in greater support for their children.  Participants have also commented on how the discussions have given them guidance in providing more intentional quality time for their children, yielding happier babies as a result!

Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center has an opportunity to increase its donor base by expanding awareness of its life honoring pregnancy and family support related services.
Our biggest challenge in the short-term is to campaign for ongoing, monthly donors.  Our mid-term goal is to extend fundraising beyond seeking annual donations to run capital campaigns and facilitate estate giving.  The longer-term goal is to build an endowment for the Center.
