Background Statement
Manatee Hope was Founded by Kathy White, LMHC and Lena Thoresen OTR/L in 2007 due to the large amount of individuals who were unable to access therapy services in Manatee County.  Individuals who did not have coverage for therapy services due to making barely more than Medicaid cut off level, yet unable to support a family on minimum wage, or individuals without coverage, and yet below poverty rate level,  was a common occurrence. Manatee Hope management/fudraising has been run on volunteer power by the Co- Executive Directors and by support by Children's Therapy Solutions which provides free space, secretarial service, utilities and use of equipment. Multiple volunteers have been utilized to arrange fundraisers and community events.  Money raised has been used to pay for direct therapy services in order to efficiently use the money to help people in need.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

I am a person who has cared for children and families all my life. By trade, I am a special education teacher, teaching elementary through high school students with behavioral management problems, disabilities and adjustment disorders. I am currently the District Trainer for Manatee County School Board, conducting trainings on how to prevent aggression and how to manage aggressive behavior in the school setting. I am also a track and field coach. In 1987 I co-founded Florida Express Track, with the mission of reaching out to minority and low income families. Through this organization we provided funding for trips out of state and taught values and discipline, introducing scholarships and encouraged, mentored and expected success both personally and on the track. Consequently, in my experience I have often seen the need for Manatee Hope. So many times I wished I would have an agency to refer to. When a single mom was dealing with depression, or when parents did not know how to deal with their son's social anxiety and not expressing himself. I now can refer to Manatee Hope for counseling or developmental evaluations, or perhaps some marriage counseling for a couple who is struggling. Via Manatee Hope we are providing assistance, providing a plan, clarity and direction for families in need. By solving problems sooner than later, we are strengthening the family unit and providing stability for children and families. Yes indeed, it is my pleasure to serve as President of Manatee Hope.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

Due to generous donations - a large amount of families have received services via Manatee Hope since 2007! Life changing interventions, services which, without this non profit, would not have been provided.

Let us give some examples:

A nurse from a local hospital came to us asking for help. She worked full time and had a major insurance plan, however, no mental health benefits. She was a single mother and had 6 children, one of them a 14 year old who desperately needed counseling. Before being referred to Manatee Hope, she had been looking for help, but no one could help her without making her pay a private pay rate which she could not afford. She was seriously contemplating sending her daughter to live with relatives in Michigan in order to get some professional help for her. Manatee Hope was able to provide counseling for a $5 copay and consequently the family was able to stay together and the necessary treatment was provided! The positive outcome and the family's gratitude was tremendous!
Another example, A 60 year old female whose husband had a stroke, who was dealing with depression and the possibility of being removed from her home due to illness preventing them from working and lack of monetary support. She had no support system and via counseling and some case management, Manatee Hope was able to help them access help and provide the professional counseling needed to transition them through this crisis time in their life.

A third example, Children with disabilities. The nurse case manager at Lawton Chiles provided the referral of this family without medical insurance. We provided services to this family who came to us for help. The father had severe back pain and seizures, they had two teenagers with Asperger's syndrome and a three year old. The three year old was unable to communicate, unable to attend to age appropriate tasks and was a safety risk due to running into the street and not following simple directions. The family had been a middle class family for years, but due to recent illness and the mother having to stay home to take care of the family's doctor's appointments and care, they had no insurance for the 3 year old. Through Manatee Hope, this family was able to receive Speech/ Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Counseling. Home programs were provided, as well as information to assist the family in accessing services already available through our community partners. Due to the generous donations of our community members, we were able to make life changing interventions for this family. Early intervention is critical and because of Manatee Hope's intervention, this family's quality of life through support, education and professional services was significantly improved! There is no way to convey in words the impact Manatee Hope has on families who have nowhere else to turn!

Program Success Examples One example is a family who come for assistance with how to cope with the fact their child was recently diagnosed with Autism. The Family had Strong denial of the significant developmental delays and the inability of the child to communicate. The child was non- verbal at 3 years old and frequently cried with tantrums lasting more than one hour at a time. He destroyed toys, climbed on furniture without regard for safety, had high pain tolerance and did not cry when bleeding and bruising. He was unable to follow directions and unable to feed self or dress himself. His parents said he was stubborn and that he was just not talking because he did not want to. The child's parents received 12 sessions of Counseling. At the end of the 12 weeks, the parents had gained insight into their own denial and was aware of normal development and programs to help their son and family. Early intervention is crucial for improving function and development in children. Without family counseling it may have taken years before the family realized their child's needs and cope with the need for intervention and home programs in order to help get him ready for Kindergarten and future life function.

Experience

I have a heart for people, and know what it is like to struggle. I believe strongly that we have to care for our neighbor and do to others like we would like for them to do to us. It was out of this vision I approached Lena about founding a non profit to help all the individuals who need care in our society. My vision is much bigger than what we currently are able to provide. I hope to expand services and respond to greater amounts of needs. Manatee Hope has been a blessing to so many people, and as a Licensed Mental Health Therapist myself, I know the value of interventions in a timely manner. In regards to my experience, I have a Masters Degree in rehabilitation Counseling and is a Licensed Mental Health Therapist. I have raised 4 children with my lovely husband, cared for my elderly parents and been involved in my community all my life. Manatee Hope is an extension of my heart, I will keep working to help the needy and most vulnerable in our society.

I would like to take this time to thank our Board Members who are so dedicated to our cause. Mr. Bratton and Mrs. Doll has served on our board sine the beginning! Also, we are thankful for Sherrie Faust who joined our board 2 years ago. We have many community partners who help identify individuals in need such a the Lawton Chiles Clinic, Medical Doctors, the manatee county school board, charter schools, churches the Elks Club, and key community members. Without our dedicated community members and volunteers, Manatee Hope would not be able to provide the excellent service we currently render. It is my joy to be able to serve as the volunteer director and I look forward to seeing how Manatee Hope will be able to impact lives in the future.

Comments
Governance Comments by Organization Challenges are, there are an increasing amount of needs to respond to. Funding is a major issue since we provide professional services. Manatee Hope has reached out to many agencies who provide therapy for children and families over the past 6 years without success in securing providers. Manatee Hope's contracted reimbursement rate is $5 less than the Medicaid rate.( the Medicaid rate for therapy has not increased since 1988, rather it has decreased) Consequently, we have been struggling to find providers. Dr. LaHood Chiropractic provided contracted services for 2 years before he moved out of state. Our strongest support is in Children's Therapy Solutions Inc which donates space and equipment as well as supplies in order for most of our donations being able to go to directly treat individuals in need.
