Impact Statement

ITN SunCoast achieved the following accomplishments in 2017.

1. ITN SunCoast continues to meet the transportation needs of a rapidly increasing number of people who use our services to stay connected to the community and to do things they need and want to do. In 2017 we provided nearly 15,000 rides. This was a substantial increase over the 9,705 rides given in 2016 and three times the number of rides provided in 2015. We anticipate providing over 20,000 rides in 2018

2. Ride Services Agreements were in effect with five assisted living facilities, one retirement community, and three churches. These agreements allow residents of assisted living facilities to get out into the community at times of their choosing, thereby enhancing their quality of life. The agreements with churches make it possible the individuals to continue to attend religious services and programs.

3. Consistent with our commitment to provide ride services to people in Sarasota and Manatee Counties regardless of financial circumstances, our Road Scholar Program continued to experience substantial growth. The program provides rides at significantly reduced rates to individuals with limited incomes. In 2017 we provided 1,875 Road Scholar rides. This was a doubling of the number of rides provided in 2016, which was an 800% increase over 2016. In support of this program, we raised nearly $20,000 in grants and donations.

4. “Let’s Go Places!” was launched as a new service offered by ITN Sun Coast. The goal of the program is to address the loneliness and social isolation of seniors. We provide transportation and an exciting calendar of events every month to area restaurants, theater, art openings, movies, museums, lectures, shopping and more. Riders are picked up at their home, share a ride with one or two friends or new acquaintances, and given a ride home.

5. “Your Ride to the Arts” continued to expand through a partnership with Florida Studio Theater and other arts/cultural venues. We also expanded our “Your Ride to Lifelong Learning” program in partnership with the SunCoast Alliance for Lifelong Learning (SCALL).

6. Rides were provided in support of Lighthouse of Manasota’s and Loveland Center’s job training and supportive employment programs for individuals with vision impairments and individuals with special abilities.

GOALS in 2018

1. Increase the capacity of iTNSunCoast to attract more volunteer drivers through an aggressive volunteer driver recruitment program. Recruiting volunteer drivers is critical to our success in serving the community and keeping the cost of our transportation services as low as possible.

2. Secure $35,000 in funding to expand the Road Scholar program. This would allow us to double the number of rides provided to individuals living on limited incomes who have the need and desire to stay connected to the community.

3. Expand “Let’s Go Places!” - Marketing of this new program has been limited to date to our current members due to budget limitations. The goal in 2018 is to secure funding so we can inform the broader community about the program in order to reduce the social isolation and loneliness that many seniors experience. Our goal is to have 200 participants in the program and provide 1,000 rides.

 4. Continue to support seniors, individuals with vision impairments and individuals with special abilities in seeking and retaining jobs by providing rides to work. Transportation is often a limiting factor in securing employment.

Needs Statement

1. $3,500: Implement an aggressive volunteer driver recruitment program. We made a volunteer recruitment video in 2016 through a grant from the Manatee Community Foundation. The goal in 2018 is to increase our recruitment effectiveness through an aggressive program that uses traditional and electronic marketing approaches. We have found that conducting print ad campaigns is the most effective way to recruit volunteer drivers.

2. $35,000: Fund the Road Scholar Program. This program provides rides at a reduced cost to individuals who have limited incomes. Funding would allow us to support and expand the program. The goal is to provide 3,500 Road Scholar rides in 2018. As of February 1, 2018, we have raised $4,500 through grants and donations toward our goal of $35,000.

3. $20,150: Launch “Let’s Go Places!”, a new and exciting ITN SunCoast program designed to address the social isolation and loneliness experienced by area residents who are in their 80s and 90s. Funding is needed to conduct a marketing campaign and hire a part-time coordinator.

4. $2,000: Provide work-related transportation at reduced rates to adults with vision limitations and individuals with special abilities working with Lighthouse of Manasota, Goodwill Manasota and the Loveland Center.

5.  $850: Design and print updated ride services and volunteer driver recruitment brochures. Current brochures contain out of date information.

Background Statement
ITN SunCoast is an affiliate of ITN America which was created by Katherine Freund in Maine in response to her three-year-old son becoming seriously injured when he was hit by a car driven by an 84-year-old. After the initial shock and anger, Katherine recognized that the situation was more than her son nearly getting killed, it was a systems issue. For over twenty years, Katherine has been leading the charge to provide a safe and dignified alternative for seniors when continuing to drive poses a threat to the community.
A collaborative grassroots effort brought the ITN model to Sarasota County. During a community assembly on aging hosted by Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence (SCOPE) in October 2006, the Sarasota community was introduced to ITN. Given that Sarasota County has the largest percentage of older adults in the nation with more than 30% of its population over 65 and with over 45% of all households including someone over 65, community leaders believed the area would greatly benefit from this model.
Representatives from SCOPE and Jewish Family & Children's Service of Sarasota-Manatee, Inc. (JFCS) met with Katherine Freund and were inspired her enthusiasm and dedication. They reached out to The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc. and formed a “team” that prepared an ITN affiliate application for Sarasota County. With start-up funding for a multi-year commitment provided by The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc.'s James Franklin Warnell & Dorothy J. Warnell Fund and JFCS serving as the sponsoring agency, the affiliation agreement with ITNAmerica was signed in August 2008 and rides were initiated in 2010.
Since 2010, iTNSarasota has provided a valuable community service by providing transportation services to adults who are at least sixty years old and individuals of any age with visual limitations. We have provided more than 40,000 rides and caused more than 40,000 smiles.
Initially, ITN Sarasota provided rides exclusively in the Sarasota and Venice areas. In 2015, in response to ride requests from people living outside of the area served, the Board of Directors expanded the service area to include Englewood and Bradenton and changed the name of the organization to ITN SunCoast to reflect the broader area served. In 2016, the service area was expanded further to include all of Sarasota and Manatee Counties.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
The heart of what our organization does is give back the freedom that the seniors in our community lose when they no longer drive. It is quite natural for all of us to take that freedom for granted until we no longer have the ability to achieve it. I have learned through the seniors we serve that there is a direct correlation between the freedom of mobility and the quality of life we live. Within a very short period of time, ITN SunCoast has proven to drastically increase the quality of life for hundreds of seniors on a monthly basis. We have quickly grown from a mere concept to an organization that puts smiles on the faces of seniors in our community each and every day.
Our two biggest challenges include:

1.   Recruiting volunteer drivers.  We continually need to attract new volunteer drivers in keep pace with the increase in the ride requests that we are receiving. This is particularly challenging due to the rapid increase in the demand for our services. We need to be more effective in attracting more volunteer drivers.
2.   Fundraising/friend raising.  Sarasota is very philanthropic community and we have found that fundraising for senior transportation programs is very challenging due to the significant competition for the funding that is available in our community. We hope that donors will consider the importance of safe and dignified transportation needs of our seniors and adults with visual impairments, so they may stay connected to the community and experience a good quality of life.
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

ITN SunCoast offers a unique service to individuals 60 and older and any adult with a visual impairment in Sarasota and Manatee Counties - the independence that comes with transportation to any activity they choose, any time, any day. Most of our riders are women in their 80s and 90s who need support to be able to do what they need and want to do. ITN SunCoast riders are treated with dignity and kindness by volunteers who offer door-to-door, arm-in-arm service. We provide whatever support an individual needs to get from their home to the car and from the car to their destination. ITN SunCoast offers a safe and comfortable option for people who find they must give up driving, and keeps them involved in activities so that they don't feel lonely and isolated.

Many seniors continue driving long after they are physically able, because they still need to get to medical appointments, the grocery store, the pharmacy, and social activities. Public transportation isn't always convenient or comfortable, and taxi rides are expensive, impersonal and sometimes daunting for our older citizens.

ITN SunCoast is a friendly, safe, and comfortable alternative to buses and taxis. Each ITN driver calls for the rider at the front door, and escorts them to the car. Ensuring that the rider is safely and comfortably seated in the vehicle, the driver provides friendly and interested companionship during the drive to the destination. Many drivers and riders travel together again and again, and enjoy getting to know each other.

ITN SunCoast is a membership-based service, providing transportation to seniors and adults with visual impairment. Members pay a modest fee to join, and the fee for each ride is based upon mileage. However, income from membership fees and per-mile charges cover only 65% of the costs of providing the rides. Fundraising is crucial to our continuing to provide our services.

The need for our transportation services will continue to grow as more of our population becomes unable to drive each year. The challenges are there for us to raise money to keep going, and to continue to recruit qualified drivers.

The mission of iTNSunCoast is to be the premier provider of dignified transportation services for individuals age 60 and over and to adults of any age with vision impairments residing in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.
iTNSunCoast is more than just a "good cause"; it is necessary and important.for our community. We do substantially more than provide rides for older people. We're helping to solve a huge social need. Seniors now have an alternative to driving that preserves their independence even as it ensures our roads are safe and our communities are healthy.
Senior transportation is a complex problem that touches every family in America. In fact, it touches every family in every industrial country in the world. We must think of senior transportation as a lifelong need for which we must plan, just as we plan for retirement or long-term care needs.

Short Term Success
Our greatest short term success story is the fact that we went from providing zero rides in January 2010 to over 400 rides per month in less than a year and a half.  We now have over 30 volunteer drivers that dedicate their time to granting hundreds of seniors the freedom of mobility.
Long Term Success

Our service helps:

  • Families and friendships endure
  • Seniors begin a new chapter in their lives that no longer includes loneliness, dependence, burden or immobility.
  • Adult children minimize their absenteeism from work
  • Businesses remain profitable

ITN doesn't rely on taxpayer support for operating expenses. In fact, ITN actually helps drive the local economy and build community. The impact to the local business community of an ITN affiliate is between $300,000 and $500,000 per year.

Program Success Monitoring
We have a very detailed tracking system that records historical data on exactly how many rides have been given, mileage driven, number of member riders, number of volunteer drivers, quantity of rides per volunteer, as well as a long list of other relevant information.
Program Success Examples
These testimonials from a few of our member riders says it all:
"How to describe my satisfaction with ITN is next to impossible. I no longer have to ask and rely on family and friends. The drivers are like private chauffeurs and treat you as though you are top Madison Avenue clients. Drivers are courteous, on time, friendly and patient. This service has taken the burden off my family and they don't worry about me driving. Each driver makes me feel special. I feel like I've known the drivers all my life."
"ITN is a Godsend!"
"I am absolutely satisfied with ITN.  It gives me a chance to be able to feel independent. They have always picked me up and delivered me home on time and safely."
Program Comments by Organization
Americans prize independence. It's part of what makes us American, and it doesn't change with age. iTNSunCoast understands that any alternative to the independence of the private automobile must come as close to this feeling of freedom as possible. That is why iTNSunCoast:
  • Is available 7 days a week;
  • Uses automobiles, rather than vans or buses;
  • Does not restrict trip purpose, frequency or destination within the service area;
  • Permits riders to travel alone or with others; and
  • Creates a sense of ownership through membership and voluntary participation.

The transition from the driver's seat to the passenger seat is never easy – for the drivers or for their families – but it is infinitely easier when there is a viable transportation alternative that keeps the older adult in control.

Management Comments by Organization

The need for convenient, safe and affordable transportation for seniors and adults with vision limitations continues to grow and will do so for many years to come as the Baby Boomers age and we live longer. As the result, the services provided by ITN SunCoast are timely and critical! We have a great opportunity to be part of the solution in keeping our community’s roads safe and affording our neighbors the means to continue to live joyful and fulfilling lives after they no longer drive. Our ability to meet this need is dependent on our success in recruiting volunteer drivers and raising the funds necessary to meet our financial requirements. We continue to explore ways to enhance our financial position by providing complementary services that decrease our dependence on fundraising and grant writing while keeping the cost of our services to our members as low as possible.
