4. Cancer Resource Network (CRN) - we continue to develop and grow CRN to help individuals find resources and services that will aid them in their personal cancer journey. We want an involved community fully aware of all resources and services available to persons dealing with cancer.

5. Our annual Cycle of Life annual fundraiser, in addition to our Jeans & Jackets event at Michael's on East allowed us to educate our community on all the facets of our mission and honor those who have cancer, have had cancer, or have lost their lives to cancer.

Our 2018 Goals:

1. Create a Team Tony Cancer Connection Center (CCC). This safe space will offer and deliver our 1-to-1 mission in a revolutionary way. The CCC will help those touched by cancer thrive in spite of their challenges.

3. Increase our Medical Grants Program to $30,000 for the year.

4. It is our goal to train 50 new peer mentor Teammates (Cancer Survivors and Caregivers) through our workshop training program.

5. Grow our annual Cycle of Life fundraiser by 25% in both Fundraising and attendance to our events.

Background Statement

In 2002, Tony McEachern competed in the Raid Gauloises in Vietnam, a grueling 621-mile endurance race. One year later, in the midst of seemingly peak physical health, he was diagnosed with a Grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma and was given two years to live. However, Tony took that diagnosis and battled through it as he did that extreme race. He fought through the pain and the desire to give up and endured. It has been 15 years since his diagnosis and Tony is still here to share his story of fighting and overcoming cancer.

The battle was not won easily. Tony endured five neurosurgeries, two years of radiation, four years of chemotherapy, and several experimental treatments. He sacrificed hair and peripheral vision to chemotherapy and radiation but never gave up.

Although he credits much of his survival to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Tony believes there were many people outside of the medical field who contributed to his recovery. He had the constant love and support from family and friends and other cancer survivors he met along the way.

The relationships with others going through cancer are what led Tony to found Team Tony Foundation. He knew it was important to continue that exchange of comfort, empathy, support, and shared experiences with those going through cancer, and for years, it was an informal service. People living in the Sarasota area knew or had heard of Tony, but in 2007, his philanthropy became more organized and mainstream. Tony walked across the state of Florida to raise money and awareness for cancer.

It was not enough; Tony wanted to do more to impact those battling cancer, therefore, in 2009, he walked from Durham, NC back home to Sarasota, Florida and raised $52,000 for Duke University to fund brain cancer research. His vision of creating a cancer support organization became a reality in 2010 when the Team Tony Cancer Foundation was officially launched.

With that launch, one of Tony’s personal goals was accomplished and a much bigger mission was created: to provide personalized matches that enable 1-to-1 support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers.

USING MY LIFE AND EXPERIENCE TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THOSE FACING CANCER
For many, this may sound strange, but I consider being diagnosed with cancer one of my greatest blessings. Don't get me wrong - years and years of treatments, surgeries, the side effects of medications and losing my peripheral vision has had a profound effect on my life. Going through cancer is tough. What I've learned is this... the connection with others is what gets us through life's challenges. I started Team Tony with the help of so many incredible people because I believe NO ONE SHOULD FACE CANCER ALONE.
Our mission is unique, important, and impacts those facing cancer in our community. Team Tony carefully matches and individually pairs a person touched by cancer (a cancer fighter) with a cancer survivor (Teammate) who has had the same type of cancer. Cancer caregivers (spouses, parents, children and other family and friends of fighters) also receive peer to peer support with other caregivers. These 1-to-1 relationships inspire hope and offer the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from someone who is uniquely familiar with the experience.

Our service is absolutely free and helps anyone touched by cancer, at any cancer stage level, at any age, living anywhere along Florida’s Suncoast Community.
Programs
Description
Team Tony's Peer to Peer cancer support is a unique program pairing cancer survivors with cancer fighters to inspire and support those impacted by cancer. We believe the cancer journey can be made easier for the cancer fighter when the experience is shared by a cancer survivor who’s been there, who understands, and can provide 1-on-1 support along the way. Our unique service is free to anyone who’s been touched by cancer. No one should face cancer alone!

Short Term Success
In the short-term, our mission helps individuals confront the anxiety and uncertainty one is faced with when tackling this potentially life-threatening illness and gives them the peer support, strength and confidence to approach it with hopes of a positive outcome.
Long Term Success
Individuals receiving support from our team will develop the support necessary to lead a more normal life with or without cancer. Ideally, we will see long-term success in action through those who come back to the program and work with our team as a cancer survivor, providing support to others.
Program Success Monitoring
We plan to use self-assessments to help individuals monitor how they feel before and after our supportive services.  By monitoring the number of individuals who come back into the program to serve others, we can also understand the impact and meaning of this program.
Program Success Examples
Team Tony was recently contacted by the mother of an 18 year old brain cancer patient. The family and the patient were terrified and wanted to talk with someone outside of the medical community who had been through the difficult prognosis and struggle of brain cancer. A brain cancer survivor from our team met the family and their son. They discussed their fears, concerns, their hopes and gained comfort from the interaction. The young man had a trusted friend, someone to talk with and someone to support him through the greatest fight of his life. The patient needed medical experts trained in the difficulties of treating brain cancer. Team Tony has a close working relationship with Duke University's Preston Tisch Brain Cancer Center. We were able to expedite a meeting between the patient and Duke and we're happy to report the young man is healthy and working full time at Publix. The mother shared what a tremendous difference it made in their lives to have someone to talk with who had been there and understood their greatest challenge.
