We received 1,467 calls seeking assistance in 2012.  These calls represented 2,195 people, including 969 children.  $28,489.65 financial assistance was found through churches in Manatee County, Florida.  Through networking with local agencies, $227,581.03 of financial assistance was found for families in need.
For 2014 our goals include:
  • Expand into Sarasota County
  • Increase the number of churches willing to help families in need
  • Add Two new members to our board
  • Network with a variety of churches who provide non-financial resources, i.e. after-school programs, sports programs, life skills programs, etc.
Background Manatee Religious Services was created in 1984 through the Manatee County Ministerial Association to serve all the churches in their quest to better serve families and individuals in Manatee County.
  1. We need 5 volunteers to take applications over the telephone.
  2. We need to add one additional employee at 20 hours per week for a total of $8,320.00.
Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

Manatee Religious Services (MRS) was designed to assist Churches in screening families and individuals seeking legitimate assistance. Everything we do is by telephone. Our applicants do not need to have an appointment, but we do focus on applicants referred to us by local churches. MRS's goal is help local churches know how to best use their benevolence funds. MRS uses church volunteers to take the applications and do the verification of information. These volunteers are warm, compassionate, and gracious in their approach to those that are hurting or in crisis. We help churches provide for a wide variety of needs; rent, utilities, clothing, tires, or a ride to the doctor. MRS will always try to match a resource to the need. We partner not only with local churches, but with other community organizations to help our applicants get the best help possible for their needs.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President
As the President of the Board, I passionately believe in the mission of Manatee Religious Services.  We have seen many lives touched and changed because MRS was available to help those in need.  People facing homelessness are still in their homes; hungry people have been fed.  People with no hope have found hope in the midst of their crisis.  The helpless, senior adults, children, and others, have been helped because we were able to connect them with the needed resources.

I volunteer with MRS because I want to give back to my community and help those who find themselves in crisis situations with nowhere else to turn.  It is a joy to help those in need.

Pastor Joey Mimbs

We do face the challenges of a lack of volunteers and funding.  Due to difficult financial times in the economy, many churches have had to cut back on their financial support.  This has left us in a difficult place as an organization.  Without regular funding our doors will close; and this will leave a huge hole in our community as far as helping the hurting.  As is true with many volunteer-based organizations, we are in need of more volunteers.  We are trying to be creative in how we communicate our needs to the local community.  We are also seeking additional board members who can help us pass the word of this much needed ministry.

Short Term Success Through crisis intervention, we are able to find assistance and resources to help individuals and families so that they can remain in their homes, keep their electricity on, etc., so that they can focus on picking up the pieces of their lives.
Long Term Success Our goal is to provide the assistance and resources needed so that individuals and families can once again be self-sufficient living normal lives.
How Program is Monitored We monitor the responses and interactions between the churches and those being helped.  Along with requiring personal interaction with our clients, we also follow up with the churches to ensure personal mentoring is being accomplished.  We track each client, by a follow up letter to the churches, along with maintaining files on each case.  Reports are offered on a monthly basis to our board who holds us accountable.
Examples of Program Success
A single mother called us recently for assistance with her electric bill.  She had two teenagers at home, and her electricity was about to be turned off.  She did not have the resources to meet this need and found herself in a desperate situation with no solution.  We were able to find her financial help through two local churches willing to partner together.  Her electricity was not turned off and her crisis was averted.  She is now being cared for by a local church.
A family with three children called us with a crisis concerning their late rent payments.  One of the parents had recently lost their job.  The family was in danger of becoming homeless due to lack of personal finances.   We were able to find financial help through a local church so that this family did not become homeless.  We also offered direction to them as they looked for more employment.
Program Comments by Organization
Our greatest challenges include a need for additional volunteers, additional funding to maintain our operation, and finding the appropriate resources to help those who find themselves in a crisis.
We have taken advantage of an opportunity to join a network call "Meet The Need" that allows volunteers to go on-line to seek and apply for volunteer opportunities.

Leadership Comments by Organization
Manatee Religious Services is challenged with being a Church-Based program but people don't immediately understand that we work with over 270 churches in Manatee County and over 50 denominations. Yes, 50! The federal Government looks at us as a corporation of churches and we fall under the same exemptions as a Church but we are working for the entire community and each and every church to help those who cannot help themselves.

Governance Comments by Organization This is a very rewarding and yet frustrating and emotionally heavy program as we search for the appropriate resources for those in need. So much good is being done to help others and the need for more volunteers is great. Funding to keep us operational is always a need as our overhead is great with 6 phone lines that allows us to take the many calls that come into our program.  M.R.S. has been reduced from 5 paid employees to 3 which puts a larger work load on each employee.  Volunteers are hard to find because of the emotional impact each caller has on the volunteer. Our board is awesome as each represents their own church in overseeing this program and yet they have such a heart for the families that call.  Their struggle is finding new funding and new board members.
