Background Statement

Established in 1959, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School is the only Catholic secondary school serving the Sarasota-Manatee area. The school is named for Edward Cardinal Mooney of Detroit who is remembered as a man widely respected as a vigorous promoter of education and as a forceful advocate of values-based education.

The school first opened in temporary quarters at Bell Shopping Plaza with classes held in eight rented stores. In 1960 a 34-acre, oak-shaded track on Fruitville Road became the permanent location for Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. Dedicated to providing a values-based education for all families who desire it, the school has grown to an enrollment of 478 students. We offer more than $200,000 in tuition assistance to more than 25 percent of our families. Our students and families have a long tradition of community service, giving more than 18,000 volunteer hours each year to more than 100 non-profit organizations and to their school.

Statement from the Board Chair/Board President

Our challenge is to provide an affordable "faith based" education to any high school student who would like to attend CMHS. Over the past few years the economic recession has made it difficult for many families to afford our tuition. We have increased our tuition aid at a rate of 25%+ per year over the past 4 years due to the increase in need.

My personal involvement with CMHS began in 1976 when I was hired to be a chemistry, physics, and physical science teacher. The 6 years of my life as a teacher at CMHS were memorable. Knowing the value and quality of education that a student receives at CMHS, I returned 12 years ago as a board member to ensure that those qualities continue at the school.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
As a Catholic high school under the auspices of the Diocese of Venice, Cardinal Mooney faces the challenge of attracting students interested in obtaining a Catholic education at a college preparatory high school while maintaining an affordable tuition. Your donation to Cardinal Mooney supports every student of our school.  Funds raised through the Annual Fund have a direct impact on the education of our students and are used to make Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School an outstanding school by offering exceptional programs, advanced technology enhancements, recruiting and retaining top-notch faculty, keeping pace with technological advances and providing scholarship assistance.
I hope you will renew and strengthen your commitment today with a gift to Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School.  We remain committed to excellence and to the promise of the finest education for our students.
