Mission
Our mission is to support Duette Elementary School so that it will remain an operating school for those students and families that choose to have the unique experience. That one day a new school will be built on this beautiful campus and the current building will become a museum to preserve the rich history of this community. “That learning will never cease at Duette School.”

Background Statement
Located on 10 - 12 beautiful acres half-way between Parrish and Wauchula on SR 62 in Manatee County, Duette Elementary is Florida's last operating one-room school. Duette School actually has 5 rooms but all the elementary students are in one room and taught by one teacher. The building was erected on this site in 1930 and 3 schools were consolidated at that time. In the early years Duette School was K-12. Duette School was a "strawberry school". The school year began in May and ended in December. Children were needed to help pick strawberries. Up to 5 generations of a family have attended here.

A special aspect of the school is that traditional ideas are valued in this country setting while the latest teaching methods are employed. Up to date technology is an everyday tool for students. The multiage classroom is continuous progress and child-centered naturally, not by design. The school is staffed by one elementary teacher, one full-time assistant teacher and a custodian. All students bring their lunch.

Duette is the ultimate multiage class with students ages 5 through 12 years old. Presently there are 16 students enrolled at Duette. Students with special needs are included in the classroom.

The mission of Duette Elementary today, as yesterday, is instilling in children a love of learning and the same family values that guided its former students to success in academics and in life. To fulfill that mission, the Duette Education Foundation, Inc. (DEFI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, was formed in December 2009.

Through a contract with the Manatee County School Board, renewable each year, DEFI receives a state allocation of approximately $3800 per student. Based on enrollment alone, state funding falls short of meeting the operating cost of the school. As a testament to the commitment of Duette School staff, Principal/Administrator Donna King generously donates her time to the school to keep her dream for the future of the school alive. Without Ms. King’s selfless action, the doors of Duette School would have closed, and an 80-year tradition of exceptional education would have sadly ended.

The overriding challenge facing DEFI is to keep the tradition of Duette School alive. An additional $100,000 must be raised each year to fund school operations.

Description At this time our main focus is the operation of the school. The funds we receive are 100% spent on operational expenses. If this school were not operating the children would have to ride a bus for a minimum of one and half hours morning and afternoon. We are dedicated to this program to provide this convenience and safety in addition to a high quality and unique educational experience.

Long Term Success
Data from 1993 shows an increase in enrollment then a decrease. 2012 shows an increase. Our vision is that one day the enrollment will require a new school to be built.
Program Success Monitoring Former students remain in communication with the school. Letters and testimonials are in our files.
Program Success Examples We attempt to follow our students beyond their 5th grade year for long term success. Our 1999 class of Kindergarten had 7 students. We know that 5/7 graduated high school. 3 were in the top 4% of their class. 1 was senior class president and the other two were active in athletics, service clubs and ROTC. The leadership skills instilled in their early elementary years helps them in the future successes.
