ITNSarasota has achieved the following accomplishments over the past few years.

 1.   541 rides were provided in January, 2014 compared to 6 rides in January, 2010. This greatly exceeded our original goal of 200 rides per month. It is clear that we are only beginning to meet the need and that there are many more people in the Sarasota community who could benefit from the services provided by ITNSarasota.

 2.    The number of volunteer drivers has steadily increased. We had 3 volunteer drivers in January 2010 as compared with 36 volunteer drivers in January, 2014.

 3.   The number of ITNSarasota member-riders has also steadily increased from 8 in January, 2010 to 195 in January, 2014. This occurred with very marketing.

 4.    Our efforts to keep the cost of rides affordable for the average member-rider continued. We accomplished this by increasing our operational efficiency, increasing the number of volunteer drivers, and increasing our fundraising and grant writing efforts.

1.    Expand the capacity of ITNSarasota to meet the transportation needs within our community thru an aggressive volunteer driver recruitment program.
2.     Develop services that create greater sustainability for ITNSarasota and reduces reliance on fundraising and grant writing.

3.   Secure funding for the ITNSarasota’s Road Scholarship program so that more rides are provided to individuals who otherwise cannot afford to take advantage of our services.

4.   Be a catalyst in providing new opportunities for seniors to engage in meaningful and joyful activities. ITNSarasota will provide the transportation so that individuals can take advantage of the many programs/events offered by community organizations.

ITNSarasota is an affiliate of ITNAmerica which was created by Katherine Freund in response to her three years old son being seriously injured when he was hit by a car driven by an 84 year old. After the initial shock and anger, Katherine recognized that the situation was more than her son nearly getting killed, it was a systems issue. For over twenty years, Katherine has been leading the charge to provide a safe and dignified alternative for seniors when continuing to drive poses a threat to the community.

Bringing ITN to Sarasota County was the result of a collaborative grassroots effort. During a community assembly on aging hosted by Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence (SCOPE) in October 2006, the Sarasota community was introduced to ITN. Given that Sarasota County has the largest percentage of older adults in the nation with more than 30% of its population over 65 and with over 45% of all households including someone over 65, community leaders believed the area would greatly benefit from this model.

Representatives from SCOPE and Jewish Family & Children's Service of Sarasota-Manatee, Inc. (JFCS) met with Katherine Freund and were inspired her enthusiasm and dedication. They reached out to The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc. and formed a “team” that prepared an ITN affiliate application for Sarasota County. With start-up funding for a multi-year commitment provided by The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc.'s James Franklin Warnell & Dorothy J. Warnell Fund and JFCS serving as the sponsoring agency, the affiliation agreement with ITNAmerica was signed in August, 2008.

Over the past six years, ITNSarasota has provided a valuable community service by providing transportation services to seniors who are at least sixty-five years old and individuals of any age with visual limitations. While there have been a few bumps in the road, not unusual for any non-profit start-up, we have provided more than 30,000 rides and caused more than 30,000 smiles.

1. Increase organizational productivity and effectiveness - $2,500

Our existing computers are old and slow. Purchasing two new computers ($1,500) would increase staffs’ productivity and effectiveness. In addition, our new member brochure is dated and marginally effective. A freshening up of the brochure and the printing of 5,000 pieces ($1,000) would be extremely valuable in letting the community know about our services and attracting new riders.

2. Hire a grant writer on a part-time basis as an independent contractor to pursue grants - $3,000.

We know there are many grant possibilities that support our mission. The challenge is having the resources to pursue these opportunities. A part-time grant writer hired as an independent contractor would be a major step forward in pursuing this important source of funding.

3. Fund our Road Scholarship Program - $5,000.

The Road Scholarship Program provides rides to individuals in the Sarasota/Venice area who could not otherwise take advantage of our services Given an average cost of a ride of $25, 200 rides could be provided for every $5,000 raised for the Road Scholarship Program.

4. Create an ITNSarasota video to support our volunteer driver recruitment efforts - $4,500.

Research indicates that making an emotional appeal is a critical element in conducting a successful volunteer driver recruitment program. Toward that end, creating a video that has both riders and drivers describe what the ITNSarasota service means to them would be a major addition to our volunteer recruitment tools.

5. Conduct an aggressive media campaign to recruit more volunteer drivers - $12,000.

The funding will be use to purchase advertising specifically seeking volunteer drivers. A marketing plan is being developed by the ITNSarasota Marketing Committee. A volunteer marketing coordinator will vigorous pursue free advertising opportunities while managing the purchase of paid advertising.

CEO Statement

ITNSarasota offers a unique service to seniors and adults with visual impairment in Sarasota County--the independence that comes with transportation to any activity they choose, all day, every day.  ITNSarasota riders are treated with dignity and kindness by volunteers who are driving their own cars, as a friend would, and who offer door-to-door, arm-in-arm service. Our drivers are among the safest on the road, having passed a multitude of tests, and are fully insured. ITNSarasota offers a safe and comfortable option for people who find they must give up driving, and keeps them involved in activities so that they don't feel lonely and isolated.

Many seniors continue driving long after they are physically able, because they still need to get to medical appointments, the grocery store, the pharmacy, and social activities. Public transportation isn't always convenient or comfortable, and taxi rides are expensive, impersonal and sometimes daunting for our older citizens.

ITNSarasota is a friendly, safe, and comfortable alternative to buses and taxis. Each ITN driver calls for the rider at the front door, and escorts them to the car. Ensuring that the rider is safely and comfortably seated in the vehicle, the driver provides friendly and interested companionship during the drive to the destination. Many drivers and riders travel together again and again, and enjoy getting to know each other.

ITNSarasota is a membership-based service, providing transportation to seniors and adults with visual impairment. Members pay a modest fee to join, and the fee for each ride is based upon mileage. However, income from membership fees and per-mile charges cover only 30% of the costs of providing the rides. Fundraising is crucial to our continuing to provide our services.

We also rely heavily upon our volunteers, both as drivers and as office workers. Our board is a working board, taking on many tasks that would normally be handled by staff. Most of our board members have busy careers, and the time required for marketing, recruiting, and fundraising planning and projects must be carved from schedules that are already full. We need funding to hire additional staff to take over these tasks in order to create a sustainable infrastructure.

The need for our transportation services will continue to grow as more of our population becomes unable to drive each year. The challenges are there for us to raise money to keep going, and to continue to recruit qualified drivers.

Board Chair Statement
The heart of what our organization does is give back the freedom that the seniors in our community lose when they are no longer licensed to drive. I think it is quite natural for all of us to take that freedom for granted until we no longer have the ability to achieve it. I have learned through the seniors we serve that there is a direct correlation between the freedom of mobility and the quality of life we live. Within a very short period of time, ITNSarasota has proven to drastically increase the quality of life for hundreds of seniors on a monthly basis. We have quickly grown from a mere concept to an organization that puts smiles on the faces of seniors in our community each and every day.
Our two biggest challenges include:

1.   Recruiting volunteer drivers.  We continually add new volunteers on a monthly basis but the demand for rides far outpaces our volunteer driver capacity.
2.   Fundraising/friend raising.  Sarasota is an extremely philanthropic community, but we have found that fundraising for senior transportation programs remains challenging perhaps due to the fact than donation needs of the arts and children's organization are more visible and the requests for support are more consistent. We hope that our generous community will also consider the importance of safe and dignified transportation needs of our seniors and adults with visual impairments, so they may have a quality of life that we take for granted and may no longer be invisible. Please take the time to get to know us and become a friend of ITNSarasota

The mission of ITNSarasota is to be the premier provider of dignified transportation services for individuals age 65 and over and to adults with visual impairments residing in Sarasota County.
ITNSarasota is more than just a "good cause"; it is necessary and important.for our community. We do substantially more than provide rides for older people. We're helping to solve a huge social need. Seniors now have an alternative to driving that preserves their independence even as it ensures our roads are safe and our communities are healthy.
Senior transportation is a complex problem that touches every family in America. In fact, it touches every family in every industrial country in the world. We must think of senior transportation as a lifelong need for which we must plan, just as we plan for retirement or long-term care needs.

Short Term Success
Our greatest short term success story is the fact that we went from providing zero rides in January 2010 to over 400 rides per month in less than a year and a half.  We now have over 30 volunteer drivers that dedicate their time to granting hundreds of seniors the freedom of mobility.
Long Term Success

Our service helps:

  • Families and friendships endure
  • Seniors begin a new chapter in their lives that no longer includes loneliness, dependence, burden or immobility.
  • Adult children minimize their absenteeism from work
  • Businesses remain profitable

ITN doesn't rely on taxpayer support for operating expenses. In fact, ITN actually helps drive the local economy and build community. The impact to the local business community of an ITN affiliate is between $300,000 and $500,000 per year.

How Program is Monitored
We have a very detailed tracking system that records historical data on exactly how many rides have been given, mileage driven, number of member riders, number of volunteer drivers, quantity of rides per volunteer, as well as a long list of other relevant information.
Examples of Program Success
These testimonials from a few of our member riders says it all:
"How to describe my satisfaction with ITN is next to impossible. I no longer have to ask and rely on family and friends. The drivers are like private chauffeurs and treat you as though you are top Madison Avenue clients. Drivers are courteous, on time, friendly and patient. This service has taken the burden off my family and they don't worry about me driving. Each driver makes me feel special. I feel like I've known the drivers all my life."
"ITN is a Godsend!"
"I am absolutely satisfied with ITN.  It gives me a chance to be able to feel independent. They have always picked me up and delivered me home on time and safely."
Program Comments by Organization
Americans prize independence. It's part of what makes us American, and it doesn't change with age. ITNSarasota understands that any alternative to the independence of the private automobile must come as close to this feeling of freedom as possible. That is why ITNSarasota:
  • Is available 7 days a week;
  • Uses automobiles, rather than vans or buses;
  • Does not restrict trip purpose, frequency or destination within the service area;
  • Permits riders to travel alone or with others; and
  • Creates a sense of ownership through membership and voluntary participation.

The transition from the driver's seat to the passenger seat is never easy – for the drivers or for their families – but it is infinitely easier when there is a viable transportation alternative that keeps the older adult in control.

The need for convenient, safe and affordable transportation for seniors and adults with vision limitations continues to grow and will do so for many years to come as the Baby Boomers age and we live longer. As the result, the services provided by ITNSarasota are timely and critical! We have a great opportunity to be part of the solution in keeping our community’s roads safe and affording our neighbors the means to continue to live joyful and fulfilling lives after they no longer drive. Our ability to meet this need is dependent on our success in recruiting volunteer drivers and raising the funds necessary to meet our financial requirements. We continue to explore ways to enhance our financial position by providing complementary services that decrease our dependence on fundraising and grant writing while keeping the cost of our services to our members as low as possible.
